John Jones 1801-1869 - Help Still Needed

Jill Report 27 Oct 2016 15:47

My my maternal great great grandfather John Jones was born in Ystalyfera in 1801. He died on the 27th April 1869 at Craig-y-Forest, Cilybebyll. His occupation varied from Woodman; farmer, mason and I suspect he was all of these. His Death Cert gives his age as 74 years so his birth should be about 1795 although census shows 1801. He was described as a General Labourer and died of 'Valvular heart disease many years; general dropsy 3 months' Certified. The informant was his neighbour Margaret X Williams present at death, Craig y Forest, Cilybebyll.

I had learnt from his son William's Marriage certificate that John Jones was a Woodward, the 1851 census shows a John Jones, Woodward He had a son called William and as family lore had given me other brothers' forenames, which also appeared in this household, I feel sure that this was the family I was seeking.

John married Gwenllian Curtis about 1835. Their Banns have been found but no marriage certificate seems to exisit. They had six known children, 5 boys and a girl. Morgan 1836, Jenkin 1837, William [my gt grandfather who went to Rhondda] born Crynant, Dylais Higher in 1840], Rees 1843, Mary 1845 and John 1850.

After John's death, Gwenllian continued to live with her son Morgan who remained a bachelor. Perhaps later she probably went to live with her son Jenkin and it was at his home that her death occured. According to her Death Certificate, she died on 1st June 1887 at Ynisnudw [Ynysmeudwy], Llanguick in District of Pontadawe. Gwenllian was 78 years of age and the widow of John Jones, General Labourer. She died of Old age, certified by G. Griffiths, L.R.C.A : Informant Jenkin X Jones, son in attendance at Ynisnudw, [Ynysmeudwy], Llanguick. This was registered on 2nd June 1887. Anyone researching this family too?

Welcome to the boards Jill.

It's unlikely that anyone else who might be researching the family will just happen across your thread.

Try clicking on "search" at the top right of this page and then "Search all members trees". Input details that you have and if there is someone else researching them, it will come up as a Match.

You can then send a Personal message to that person and hope that they are able and willing to reply to you (not guaranteed unfortunately for various reasons).

Thank you Mel, I will try that soon. Yes thanks, I do have that Banns also. The marriage seems to have been either forgotten by the vicar [ on a scrap of envelope I suppose] or married elsewhere.

Thanks for the help. Nice to know someone else on here. Last time I was a member, I don't think I wandered about enough.
:-(

Welcome to the Boards, Jill

for future reference, please do NOT tick any reply.

The tick is supposed to indicate that the request has been answered and no further information is required. Not to acknowledge that you have seen the post

Unfortunately, it is a quirk of GR that you can tick but you cannot untick ..... so it remains as a wrong but permanent marker.

May I suggest that you edit your title to add "help still needed"?? The member helpers will then know to look at it.

To do that, click on Edit on your Opening Post, a new screen will open and you can type in either the Title line or the on the request. Then click Submit.
