I'm trying to find out what happened to James taylor born 24 Aug 1889 in Wigan, son of John Taylor and Jane Brown,

In 1891 he was living at 13, Castle Street, Wigan, Lancashire, England with his parents and brother John Arthur.

In 1901 he was living at 97 Queens Street, Wigan, Lancashire, England; his father had died so was living with his mother and brother.

That's where I lose track of him.

His mother remarried to Gerald Bertie Finley in December 1901. She was living in Wigan in 1911 with her son John Arthur, her husband Gerald was boarding elsewhere. Jane was living in Liverpool in 1939, She died in 1943 in Liverpool.

Her son John Arthur was also living with his family in Liverpool in 1939.

Any help appreciated :-)

Thank you Choccy :-) I wonder if I can find out more about his military career to confirm that it is him.

Try here:

forces-war-records.co.uk

This lists both those who died and those who survived the war.
It shows lots of J Taylors who were in the York & Lancaster Regiment in WW1 (assuming your James was still a soldier then - of course he may have been in a different regiment by then).

You'll need to buy a subscription to view the details of each record, but a one-month sub is only £8.95. I'm not sure how much detail they give - whether you'd be able to identify your James from it or not.

PLEASE NOTE: The sub will renew automatically until you cancel it.

Can I just say here that , in my opinion, that site is a total rip off - I found nothing on any of the records which gave any more detail than you would find on any other site.

There are only transcripts of the details of name, regiment and no. etc - no actual records at all !!!

Others on here will agree...............

Thanks for that, Dea - I haven't actually tried it myself, apart from the basic free search.
