Charles Hector Ling

I don't see any reference to Charles Hector either- apart from on the 1911 census, and perhaps his marriage certificate. I am certain he was born just Charles- same as when he died.

I don't think it was that unusual for people to add or use slightly different names when marrying at that time. My father married as Alfred, but this was one of his middle names as he was born James! (He omitted his other two names). If the family I posted is correct his mother died before he married and father had new partner- he may well have genuinely thought his middle name was Hector or perhaps he thought it would impress the in-laws? But as you say Sylvia- the marriage certificate would certainly help.

Emma- the marriage certificate will give you father's name and occupation. It will also tell you who the witnesses were- they were often friends and family that may help to confirm the correct Charles.

If you want to order a certificate it's very easy- but does cost £9.25. You can order it here: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Edit: just a thought Emma- Do you have you Grandfather's births certificate (Charles A Ling b1919)? If you do- what was the address?

Alternatively you could try contacting descendants of your grandfather's sister, Evelyn- she had at least three children born Hertfordshire. They may have more information on the family. Please add to this thread if you need further help.

Regards,
Austin

I searched and searched last night, and could not find any other listing for Charles Hector

There is a Charles Horace born at roughly the same time, and he must be accounted for when looking at any Charles H.

I gave up when I found that there had been so much information posted on the 2013 thread, and no apparent attempt to buy the marriage certificate, that would at least give us the father's name.

My gut feeling is that Charles may well have given himself the middle name Hector for some reason unknown!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 15 Jun 2016 04:35

did you ever buy that marriage certificate??

it would give his full name, but more importantly, his father's name so we had a chance to trace him

Emma Report 15 Jun 2016 03:52

My great-grandfather, Charles Hector Ling, was a 'boarder' in 1911 and filled in the census on behalf of the head of house. He filled in his own age as 22 and his own place of birth as Suffolk Eye.

However, myself and my sister cannot find any record of a Charles Hector Ling being born in the general area at the time he suggests. Is it possible Genes Reunited has no record of his birth for some reason, and if so, where else can we look, as we cannot follow the Ling surname further back without knowing who his parents are?

It is also possible he lied about his age or birthplace for some unknown reason, or even changed his name at some point. Is this as likely as his birth record not being on the site?

Where else can we look to find information on our great grandfather, or is it a lost cause?
