Thanks, safc.I thought that the Ancestry tree seemed to point to the Frazer marriage as his second marriage.By the marriage you have found it would appear she was his first??? Couldn't find William in 1841 Census, but 1851 states he is married but there is no wife name given. His age given as 36.Living Weymouth.

Thanks to everybody.I'm still confused as to when he married Elizabeth Applen if he married Susanna Frazer in 1834? I also found "Maddies" marriages in 1850 and assumed the Elizabeth in 1861 Census was that Elizabeth Gould Jeans. Are we looking at 2 different William Watch,I wonder??

"Confused",Terry L.

maybe she never did marry him.

There were at least as many common-law marriages among our ancestors as there are today.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 10 Jun 2016 06:13

I agree- I don't believe they married. Perhaps he was still married (or maybe she was?) There was usually a reason as to why people didn't marry.

The 1850 Weymouth marriage is not your bloke. That marriage was between William and Phoeby Bishop and they are still together in 1881

If your William did marry Susanna Frazer, I couldn't see a death for her- however, there is this marriage- so maybe Susanna married bigamously?:

Thanks,to all, once again. So the mystery remains. The tree(Watch Family) on Ancestry seems to indicate that William was married to Elizabeth and had 7 children and later married Susanna Fraser and had 1 more child. I've seen so many misleading "facts" on Ancestry that it makes you doubt things.Maybe we will never
know?
All the best,Terry L.

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Jun 2016 19:32

trees on ancestry cannot be trusted!!

People copy information from other trees without seeing if there is any documentation, and then they fail to do their own due diligence.

I've seen 20 or more trees who all copied from each other .......... and all had the wrong information, but it was impossible to determine the "original" one.

I think Austin is correct ........

It looks like William married Susanna in 1834, as safc posted earlier (and re-posted here for you) .........

The marriage then seems to have broken down, and William and Susanna went their separate ways.

Austin found a marriage for a Susanna Watch nee Frazer in 1846 in Devon

So ............... it seems that Susanna married bigamously in Devon, and possibly moved to Greenwich, Kent by 1851.

Meanwhile, William stayed in Dorset, and formed a relationship with Elizabeth.

The only legitimate child then would be the one with Susannah, if hthere was one.

The children with Elizabeth are illegitimate, as indicated by the fact that at least one of them was registered and baptised under mother's surname.

Maybe William did not marry Elizabeth because he did stay in Dorset, and everyone would have known about Susannah.
