It may be worth checking the Poor Relief records to see if the mother claimed relief. These records are indexed and held in the Mitchell Library in Glasgow.

This may very well be a 'red herring' as there appear to be dozens of families living at 20 Charlotte St. but this may be worth looking to see if they ever had a connection to a Samuel? There is not one on this census though:

That is exactly what it is but the only details it gives is his address which was 20 Charlotte street,Port Dundas,I can not find him on the census at that address.Chris

Thanks to my freebie credits for SP, I have looked at the births.

Samuel Johnston WAS added as the father after a paternity suit via an RCE

It's hard to read but his address at Dec 1882 is given as: 20 Charlotte Street.
I'm sure it says... Dundee

GlasgowLass Report 5 May 2016 19:14

Christine,
When you say that you got a "revised" birth cert, what do you mean?

If the father was not in attendendance at the birth registration, and as the mother was unmarried, his name cannot be included.

Often, a paternity case was raised and, if the Sheriff then ruled that Samuel was the biological father, an RCE will be attached to the original certificate(s) .
(Scotlands People)
An RCE may provide additional info on Samuel

I will see if I can trace him further.....

He is down as father of the head of household but that can't be right as his age doesn't fit so something is 'astray' here.
