If you mean that "Master" might be a mistranscription of Alfretta - no , it isn't.
He's definitely a male child.

[I don't know why I wrote that Henry was a farmer - no, he isn't - he's an engineer.]

I don't see Gertude and Henry Handley in 1911, nor anyone who could be their son.

"Alfretta" was not a common name but feel sure is was not after the town 'Alfreton'

There are several births with that name and they are not born/lived in Alfreton

Can't see any likely Darrington/Handley, Hill/Handley, or Rudkin/Handley marriages in England.

Maybe one of them went to South Africa and married there?

I have no idea if the Handleys coming and going to/from S Africa are related to you or to each other or not.

Have to go out, so can't spend more time on it at the moment.

As a fairly wild guess, I would suggest she was called Alfretta after the town of Alfreton, where the Darringtons lived, so she was probably a relative.

Do you know anything else about Alfretta, Olive Jean, or is she a mystery person who has just popped up in your tree?

I wonder if this family is related - on an earlier visit??

Master Handley
in the UK, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960
Name: Master Handley
Birth Date: abt 1905
Age: 1
Port of Departure: Durban, South Africa
Arrival Date: 20 Apr 1906
Port of Arrival: Southampton, England
Ports of Voyage: Durban
Ship Name: Galeka
Shipping line: Union Steamship Company
Official Number: 110265

Master Handley was born in Transvaal.
His parents are Henry and Gertrude Handley, aged 31 and 26.
Henry's a farmer.

Over the years, there are quite a few comings and goings of various Handleys between South Africa and UK.
No further sightings of Alfretta, though, unfortunately.

Her middle initial is O, not D.

Ancestry's transcription says she was born South Africa, France! It's actually South Africa, Transvaal.
