Jane Shepherd 1800-1867 Cornwall

Catherine, could you maybe respond to what Mary and I have pointed out concerning the rather obvious connections between Jenny/Jane Jago and Jane Brickwood?

(you may not be aware that Jane and Jenny are essentially interchangeable names, and it was not at all uncommon for a woman to be called by both of them during her life)

and to the question of what evidence there is for any connection at all to Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy?

Jane Shepherd Brickwood had a daughter named Katherine, which was Jenny/Jane Jago's mother's name, and even more obviously, as Mary has now pointed out, she had a son called Philip *George* *Jago* Brickwood.

She had children named for each of her parents, and a child who carried her own birth surname.

Where else would the name Jago in her son's name have come from??

The 'spinster of this parish' notation on her marriage record could simply have been an assumption by the vicar, although yes, it would have been unexpected

but there certainly seems to be no record whatsoever of a Jane Shepherd spinster of that parish.

Maybe autosomal DNA testing would produce a connection with a Jago or a Hardy somewhere ...

Catherine

Catherine Report 27 Mar 2016 20:21

According to the parish marriage record she was a spinster of the parish, therefore had not been married before. I have come across Anlaby Shepherd before and have been unable to find any connection. If you know of any connection I would love to know

Mary

Mary Report 27 Mar 2016 20:15

I'm inclined to think she was baptised Jenny Jago by George and Catherine Jago and married as J Jago to a Mr Sheppard.
She had so Phillip George Jago Brickwood so the above would be where that name came from

George Jago born Kingsand 1769 died 1841 to Catherine 1765-1848.

1841 Maker D8 .15 Catherine 75 with daughter Catherine.
on the same page is son Nathaniel Jago born Nov 1801.
Phillip and Jane are D8 >5 so living in same area.

Catherine, is there serious reason to think that the records I found for Jago - Shepherd - Brickwood are _not_ the answer to your question???

What evidence is there for your own 'conclusion' that your Jane Shepherd was the illegitimate child of Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy? even if she were, would she not have been baptised somewhere?

Family legends are such fun. Mine is that my gr-grandparent was the illegitimate grandchild of a Viscount ...

The plain (in both senses) and obvious explanation for Jane Shepherd is that she was Jenny Jago, born 1801 to George and Catherine, who married, first, Anlaby Henry Shepherd, who died in 1822, and married, second, Philip Brickwood, all of these events occurring in Maker/Kindsand.

Catherine

Catherine Report 27 Mar 2016 19:14

Thank you all for your responses. My question has still not been answered but there a couple of avenues that I can now pursue.
My original research was to find how my family were connected to Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy. My g grandmother was a Hardy, but no relation. My conclusion is that Jane Shepherd was the illegitimate child of the above. Family legend tells of Thomas Hardy being an ancestor and my father saw a painting of said Hardy in his aunt's house, which she sold in 1930's.

have you tried the Devon FHS? I have found their system for requesting records incomprehensible and expensive, but it might be worth a try

or post at their discussion board to see whether anyone can help

Catherine you had all that information but no one else did, it is important for anyone trying to help to know what all the available sources say about the individual in question.

Yes, I have ancestors who lived in that bit of (now) Cornwall that suffered from the shifting border as well. My grx3 grandmother was in Maker in 1841 too. :-)

If Jane was born about 1801 (although her age in censuses could be a nice round 40-50-60 and she might be a little older), she could possibly have been a widow when she married Brickwood in 1826. Does her marriage record specify her status?

Thanks, I have all this information.
Kingsand was in Devon until about 1840 when it became part of Cornwall. It makes it very confusing when you are researching.

Catherine Report 27 Mar 2016 12:51

Trying to find parents of Jane Shepherd. According to census she was born in Kngsand, Cornwall. She married Philip Brickwood in 1826. I can find no record of baptism or any other siblings. The first record I have is her marriage.
Any help to solve this mystery would be appreciated.
Thanks Cathy
