There was a child born in 1924 that could most certainly be Ethel's with her first husband, and that might well be the closed record.

I will not post the record as hat child might still be alive, although there are several records for people with the same name.

well, they didn't marry until 1941 ............. maybe they didn't even know each other in 1939 ;-)

She's actually on the Register under the name Penny ......... Hyson was added later after she married.

It is very deceiving how the later name is the one that show first on the transcription. The name in brackets is always the one that is on the Register.

The closed record will be someone born after 1925 (?) but with no death record before ca 1991 .................. it could be a relative or a child that she had with Mr Penny

EDIT:- anyone born after 1916 is a closed record on the 1939 Register.

Reuben may have signed up for WW11 as he's not with Ethel here

1939 register

Sorry, this record is officially closed. Check if you can open a closed record.

According to freebmd, the marriage was in the December quarter (ie, 4th quarter) .......

Marriages Dec 1941 (>99%)

Hyson Reuben P Penny Leeds 9b 1047
Hyson Reuben P Silver Leeds 9b 1047
Penny Ethel Hyson Leeds 9b 1047
Silver Ethel Hyson Leeds 9b 1047

and as safc said ............ it indicates that it was a second marriage for Ethel

Dabbling again after a break for a while!

Whilst researching Reuben Philip Hyson...a rather unusual name, (always useful!)

1941 marriage shows spouse surname as 'Penny or Silver'

Ethel Silver 9B 1047 9 - 3rd quarter

Ethel Penny 9B 1047 63 - 4th quarter

Both Leeds, Yorkshire.

He was born in 1900 and there are two other marriages, which could be potentially correct given the dates but I'm confused as to the two Ethels.

Could anyone offer any explanations please?

Many thanks.
