I discovered this this morning:it's on Find my past, under Manchester Prison Records 1847-1881: Cornelius crook,

On that passenger list in 1914 Richard & Martha are going to join Martha's brother James Mason, Smithfield St., McKeesport, Pennsylvania.

Nearest relative at home was Martha's father James Mason, 44 Odey? St., Hollinwood, Oldham.

Married Martha Ann Mason Spinster Prestwich Reg. Office 27th October 1906 whilst a Reservist. she later named as NOK

29.6.99 to 7.12.1902 - Home service
8.12.1902 - 8.3.1906 - India
9.3.1906 - ? - Home

EDIT - 23.3.1904 Extended service to 8 years with the Colours (so up to June 1907 from enlistment). He would then have had a responsibility to the Reserves for a period.
Transferred to Reserves 29 July 1906 (so a bit earlier than end of his 8 years). Recorded as Absent 30 June 1909.
On 4.8.1910 he Claimed the Benefit of the King's Pardon and was given a Protecting Certificate

Miles Platting is about a mile from Manchester City centre so could be looking for someone who says they are from Manchester on later census.

No chris..I might have got a bit carried away with Richard crook born 1881 and his disappearing dad Cornelius crook born 1852...But its actually Richard(1881) ime looking for,maybe some death info as I cannot find him anywhere else...

If it's the right death, and she was lying, it's probably because it was easier than divorce, which was too difficult & expensive for most people back then.
