SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 20 Mar 2016 18:17

so is Josephine Cowie your 3x gt grandmother?

or was she another wife?

If the former, am I correct in saying that Charles would then be your 5x gt grandfather?

How exactly are you ? connected to Charles ...The Meredyth Family that Charles Burton Newenham Meredyth appears to be connected to is very complicated to work out and it is easy to get mixed up.

Sorry had not realised had posted before on Charles Meredyth but was specifically looking for him after 1830's. Sylvia thank you for those newspaper archives in them George Augustus states he is the only son of Charles Burton butin fact he had two brothers.I know Alexander died in 1847 but can not discover to Elbert. How do I acces Irish records or perhaps he emigrated as well

The notice of his death that Gins posted above was in the Belfast, Northern Ireland, The Belfast Newsletter (Birth, Marriage and Death Notices), 1738-1925

The image shows that the full notice was .........

August 4, in Dublin, aged 81, Major Charles Burton Meredyth, late of Athy, only surviving brother of Sir Edward Newenham Meredyth, Bart.

It was spelled Newenham in the paper.

SylviaInCanada Report 19 Mar 2016 21:29

The death notice says he died 4th August 1858, age 78 ....... that puts year of birth at approximately 1780

But don't forget that age at death is only the age known to the informant, and can be years out depending on how truthful the deceased person had been

If Meredyth had been vain, he might have lopped a few years off his age :-)

Several items in the newspapers in 1904/05 re the Australian heir-presumptive to the title, and said to be the son of Charles Burton Meredyth "by his second wife".

Thank you for that link, it loooks interesting, we didn't know he was married before Maria. You're right about the accuracy though, I'll have to try and cross check it with other cources

Dea Report 19 Mar 2016 10:26

This is also confusing on the dates - it is information shown in Debrett's Peerage which you can view here:

http://www.mocavo.co.uk/Debrett-S-Peerage-Baronetage-Knightage-and-Companionage/117286/452

Half way down the page - it has him born 1778 and death as 1865 (which from newspaper report we know is wrong ?) - Ist marriage to Anna Brooks and then to Maria Jervis.

Thought you might like to glance through though as there is lots of info on the rest of this family. (Not sure how accurate it is though looking at the above?)

WoodfortheTrees

WoodfortheTrees Report 19 Mar 2016 09:41

Have looked at his death announcement in newspapers put his age at 78 in 1851 but if he was born in 1174 he would have been 84 so a little confused. Thank you for all your help

Re the info Gins has given above - I don't know if this relates but I googled and it came up with the article below:

Saunders's News-Letter Dublin, Republic of Ireland

27 Aug 1858
RAILWAY RETURNS,

, I7th Lancers. Assistant Adjutant-General H.M.’s Forces, Bombay, and of Pishl-igh, Devon. the Inst., suddenly. Major Charles Burton Meredyth, aged yeara. On the Inst., Newport, Isle of Wight, James Kirkpatrick, Esq-, aged 68 ycara,

It is from:

"Search British Newspaper Archive" on GR but I don't have access to view.

It 'may' give more info if it is the same person?

EDIT - While I was typing it has been posted that he 'was' a Major in the army so it looks as if it is the same man so might be worth looking at that article?

WoodfortheTrees Report 19 Mar 2016 09:08

Thank you for his date of death. It looks like as I suspected he abandoned his wife and children. Maria was very young when he married her with no income, Charles had been a major in the army and his father was Sir Barry Colles Meredyth and he came from a wealthy family, so I suspect upon his fathers death he returned to Ireland. In 1841 his wife claimed she was a widow so I was looking in the wrong place and the wrong year so thank you again

I am searching for the whereabouts or death of Charles Meredyth. He was born in 1777 in Kildare Ireland and married in Lambeth in 1822 to Maria Jarvis. His father was Barry Colles Meredyth. I have a child born in 1826 and the last one born in 1832, Charles is not on the 1841 census and as yet have been unable to find his death. Thank you in advance for any help you are able to give
