despite the advertising, this site does not have its own records.

It has access to records transcribed by other sites, especially FMP, which is the ster sister and owned by the same company.

Looking on Ancestry, James seems to be the only child christened with parents James and Margaret Scott. It may be that Margaret died and James remarried. It could be costly but it may be worth looking on SP for a possible death for James (Sen). Scottish death certificates name all known spouses as well as parents if known. Sadly, though, registration didn't begin until 1855 in Scotland and James may have died before then.

Familysearch have transcripts of lots of the Scottish OPRs. The original images are only available on Scotlandspeople. Scottish census record transcripts are available on a few sites but again the only place for the original images would be Scotlandspeople. Freecen has covered the 1841 census quite well.

I don't think as many Scottish OPRs as English ones have survived. Where they have, they provide so little information it's difficult to be sure that you are following the correct line.

I've been researching in Scotland for over 40 years and think I'm doing quite well if I get back to the early to mid 1700s with any certainty.

Bmds for Scotland are on another site

www.Scotlands People .gov.uk. It's not a subs site I,m afraid so they keep their own records and aren't shared with other sites

You can find Scottish census up to 1901 ,the 1911 is only available on Scotlands People . Ancetsry does hold some parish records though

am i going mad or are there no scottish records on this site?

i am trying to reach beyond my ancestor JAMES ROGERSON b1811 in dumfries and galloway (kirkcudbright, i believe), and can't find a thing on him! he ended up in essex in his 20s/30s and i have a good record of them from then on, but nothing before.

his parents, i believe, are JAMES ROGERSON and MARGARET SCOT, but i'm stuck now, as GR is showing NOTHING for any of my scottish ancestors. :-|
