But where in Ireland??? Nancy was born c 1826 in Ireland, possibly Cork but not definite. Moved to Canada, married Peter McArthur in Ontario and died in Quebec in 1888. And that is ALL the info my friends have. Does it ring any bells with anyone? Can anyone find her anywhere?? Thanks in anticipation - as always xxxx

From what you say, I assume your friend does not have the marriage cert/ record, which might give her father's name as a possible clue?

Why possibly Cork?
A tree on Ancestry (your friend's ??) cites the 1861 and 1871 Canadian censuses - but they just say she was born in Ireland.

Not that I can see any record of her birth in any case!

Just a wild suggestion - as Nancy could be short for something:

Johannah Stone
in the New York, Passenger and Immigration Lists, 1820-1850
Name: Johannah Stone
Arrival Date: 30 May 1848
Age: 20
Gender: F (Female)
Port of Arrival: New York
Port of Departure: Limerick
Place of Origin: Ireland
Ship: Heather Bell
Family Identification: 997927
Microfilm Serial Number: M237
Microfilm Roll Number: 72

EDIT:
No, probably not - that one's married to a Michael Stone.

Unless she was a widow when she married Peter.
(No, I don't really think she's the one!)

ArgyllGran Report 23 Feb 2016 22:13

The tree on Ancestry doesn't mention the 1851 census:

Nancy Stone

in the 1851 Census of Canada East, Canada West, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia
Name: Nancy Stone
Gender: Female
Age: 26
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1826
Birthplace: Ireland
Province: Canada West (Ontario)
District: Lanark County
District Number: 19
Sub-district: Perth
Sub-District Number: 187
Household Members:
Name Age
Nancy Stone 26

EDIT:

Again, probably not - that one's married to a Robert Stone.
They have 4 children:

Johnston, age 8, born Ireland.
Margaret Jane, 6, Ireland
Mary Ann, 3, Canada
William, 1, Canada.

firstly, thank you for your stirling effort here, I can only pass this on. My 'friend' is a 3rd - distant cousin in Canada who has found me by our DNA matches! I almost wonder if she was widowed even ….and remarried. I will email him to see if he has anything more but I am not too hopeful. Again as I say, thank you so much for your trouble.x

On the 1861 census she's listed as Nancy Stone wife of Peter McArthur. A common practice in Quebec to use wife's maiden name. Children are Jane 11, Archibald 9, Robert 7 and Margaret 5. All born Lower Canada (Quebec) as was Peter. Nancy born Ireland.

your friend is / knows the person who corrected the name Mc.Arthur to McArthur in the 1871 Canadian census?

the person who made the correction is one of those who gives no indication of whether/how they are related

if the person who made the correction is not your friend or someone known to her, it would be worth making contact through Ancestry

for info, son Charles married in 1888 in NY State
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F6ST-56G
mother named as Nancy Stone

on a side note, I'm curious about your DNA match - was it from an autosomal test, and would you mind saying which company?

Dalesville is abt 90km NW of Montreal and abt 10km NW of Lachute.
Brownburg/Chatham is midway between Dalesville and Lachute.

hello again, all! You certainly come up with some amazing stuff! I am going to copy it and forward it on - this distant cousin lives in Canada. He will be able to access some of the stuff over there now. Thank you very much, once again, I do appreciate this.
Eunice.

Joonie Cloonie - my initial testing was done on ancestry .c0 but it didn't give many leads. This year we took the 23&me testing, Very interesting, you can choose to receive health info or not, and what you might die of! But it breaks down the haplogroups and suddenly I have 846 3rd to distant cousins out there ……. Interesting to see also what my genetic background is ..!!

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 26 Feb 2016 00:08

Yikes. I'm doing mine with FTDNA - I wouldn't trust Ancestry to analyse an amoeba, and I choose not to have 23andMe sell my genetic info, aggregated or not.

I've become quite an amateur pro at YDNA, but I'm not looking forward to trying to figure out 846 autosomal distant cousin results! ... but I probably won't have more than three anyway, given how it's gone so far. :-)

Interesting to hear how yours went, and good luck with them all!

Site now working
Quebec, Non-Catholic Parish Registers, 1763-1967 > Chatham Baptist Baptisms, marriages, burials with index 1837-1882 > Image 9 of 578

Peter McArthur s/o Archibald McArthur, blacksmith, rear of Chatham & Margaret Stewart was b 23/11/1823 and presented on 13/12/1837.
Also presented that day were his siblings:
John b 8/11/1825;
Catharine b 12/10/1827;
Elisabeth b 18/6/1830;
Nargaret b 10/4/1833;
Jane b 10/5/1835;
Jessey b 16/5/1837.
[see images 9-12 of 578]

It seems to me that 5km into bush from Chatham fits with "rear of Chatham" and location of Dalesville.
Seeing as Archie & Margt were Scottish, it's maybe worth noting that many Scots use Jane/Jean and Janet/Jessie as interchangeable pairs.
