It's a prison malyon. I think the age is actually 18 (would fit with his age being 19 in 1842) and he is a framework knitter.

If the baptism given by Maddie above is the right one then this is a possibility for Thomas's mother in the 1851 census living with one of Thomas's married brothers (this brother called his first son Thomas so that could be after his father):-
