you say the baby mary died after the mother died, and baby mary was baptised the same day as the mother was buried, then i dont think that they would have the same reference numbers on death certificate,also if baby mary was dying she would not have been taken to the church but have been baptised at home or where she was born

This does not mean that they have the same death certification ref number. The 399 is the page number of the index compiled from the death registers. There were 10 items at that time to 1 page so 10 deaths are shown with the same district (23) and page number (399)

If you want to order both certificates put on each order the age at death (I think I remember rightly that there is a space on the order form for this)
