Does anyone know the ancestors or the family of this man the half brother of my mother but one she never met. His father was divorced from my grandmother C1933 when John was 10 and then he married Lucy Jones. As was the custom in those days John had to stay with his father John Alfred Pankhurst something my grandmother regretted very much. we have been searching for years for him but I don't know what if anything his surviving family know of my grandmother Ellen (Nellie) Casemore nee Longhurst. If anyone knows the family please could you let me know if anyone reading this know anything of the family

Well his maternal ancestors would be the same as your mother's if your grandmother was the common parent. So are you looking for the ancestors of his father please? That is to say ancestors of your grandmother's first husband?


I wouldn't assume that it was the custom for fathers to be awarded custody of children in divorce cases in the 1930s. Perhaps you should order a copy of the divorce papers and then make up your own mind about the custody. OH's grandfather divorced in 1920 and got custody of some of the children but after reading the divorce papers and knowing what followed (his lady friend who became his second wife was pregnant at the time) I don't think he should have got custody of any of the children!

Thank you for your reply - After a little bit of more research I think that his father John Alfred Pankhurst married again in 1934 to a Lucy Jones in Thanet. I don't have John Leslie's death certificate yet. I know there must have been a divorce because both John Alfred and my grandmother re-married and the custody of John Leslie was awarded to his father my gut feeling is my grandmother Ellen (Nellie) Longhurst would not have left him behind willingly. I have been looking for this family for years so I definitely feel this is the right family. My mother is 84 and has always wanted to meet her half brother. We now know this is not possible but would like her to have opportunity to contact with his family before its to late

Looks like he married just after WW2. Wonder if he met his future wife while stationed in Yorkshire.
