I am trying to find ancestors of Thomas Walter Jones - he is named as the father on my mother's birth certificate (1921) South Derbyshire/Leicestershire/Staffordshire border area. Thomas is the missing link in my family tree.

Do you have their marriage cert? This will give you his father's name and occupation which may help find them on census records.

If you don't have it, then what does the birth certificate give as mother's name?
With this we can find a marriage.

I've checked all the usual records - definitely wasn't married to my grandmother. My mother took the family name of Ford as did all the older siblings, however I know that the father of the other children was killed during the 1ww. Mother was born in 1921! when questioned she would just say that her father died before she was born! I just want to know who my grandfather was

Susan .............

welcome to the Boards.

For future reference, please do NOT tick as answered any post unless your question has truly been answered.

The tick function is not to show that you have seen or approved any post, but to indicate that you need no further help

Unfortunately, it cannot be reversed, and so some helpers will not check this thread.

As I read the posts, I think you have not reached a resolution to finding your maternal grandfather ........ which may, of course, be impossible.

The only possibility might be if your grandmother or one of her siblings wrote the name down somewhere, eg in a family bible or letter, with more identification.
