ChrisofWessex Report 19 Jan 2016 15:32

I had a long thank you piece and just minutes ago instead of edit I hit delete!

Adelaide was the sister of my g.gmother Isabella Jane Middleton (b. Camberwell 1855/56) who married Robert Spence b. Dublin a foundry and marine engineer. His father and two uncles owned a foundry, Spence Bros, sited next door to Guiness Works. Mentioned before are Arthur, Jessie and Maud were 3 of Isabella's children. My mother was named Isabella Jane Spence after her g.mother.

I am so delighted to have got through this brick wall and by the looks of it the other research had no idea of Adelaide's sister existing.

Thanks everyone for your help. :-D :-D :-D

Am so relieved to hear Adelaide was respectable looking! Probably looked like an innocent cherub. Reading the remark of her father that she was of very eccentric habits has triggered off a memory.

I used to hear my dad tease my Mum about 'mad arthur'. I met Arthur when I was 13/14, he was living with his and Aunt Jessie's sister - Aunt Maude. We turned up unannounced to Maude's home in Dublin. Arthur was home alone. White hair down past his shoulders wearing white gloves (apparently he only took them off to play the piano). I gathered up courage (as my Dad was there) would he play for me please. He was delighted until he found the instrument was locked. Aunt Maude had taken the key out with her! He was offered a situation with a Philly Orchestra until it was discovered he could not sight read. This gift still appears in the Spence cousins today.

Aunt Maud as far back as 1958 at my dad's funeral was telling everyone in hearing that the Kaiser owed her 4 years salary for her husband. His ship was in Hamburg when WW1 broke out and he was imprisoned for 4 years. No pay but she was adamant he owed her! I reckon there is a streak of eccentricity in the Spence lot.

there's actually at least 3 trees .............. one has her as Myddleton, parents unknown

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 17 Jan 2016 01:10

The tree owner doesn't actually have that marriage ... they have just assumed a marriage date from the number of years married stated in the 1911 census

Chris may want to get in touch and share info

tree easily found at Ancestry by searching for Adelaide Paske (now that I found her on that all-records search at Ancestry for Adelaide Middleton)

I have no idea why Ancestry turned up Adelaide Paske, since the name Middleton doesn't seem to figure anywhere in that tree

it's awful when you find Ancestry is smarter than you are

Sylvia .............

I found them in 1891 and 1901, and I think I found Jane by herself in Lancashire in 1881 as a parchment maker ....

but Adelaide is not with them

I can't find a certain marriage or death for her ............... A M is not an unusual name

I looked on Passenger lists but they all start much later
