How do i go about finding the maiden name of someone who remarried before civil registration (about 1816) . All I have is her first name and surname of her married name to first husband. No first name of first husband. Her name is Mary Plews and she married James Pearson in 1816 in St. Marylebone, Middlesex. I have no idea what her maiden name was or the first name of her first husband.
Hope this makes sense.

The Banns showing on ancestry say Spinster after her name

The marriage above:

James Pearson is a bachelor and Mary a widow

Wit: Ruth Parkinson & Lucy Card. Ruth is also a witness for another marriage on the same day of Joseph Hayles & Elizabeth Vally?

Do you have her on any census records?
This will give an idea of her age and place of birth which may help.

Looking at 1861 image, would say Finchley Common...

Was just looking at this

1851
Name: Mary Pearson
Age: 68
Estimated birth year: abt 1783
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: James Pearson
Gender: Female
Where born: Finsley, Middlesex, England
Civil Parish: Settrington

Sub-registration district: Rillington

Household schedule number: 65

Folio: 126
Page Number: 19
Household Members:
Name Age
James Pearson 56
Mary Pearson 68
John Pearson 34
Sarah Ann Pearson 10
Mary Pearson 1

...........which would fit with 1861 posted by Chris, so this does look to be the correct family?

Was just wondering if the baptism of one of their children may give a clue?

Thought Sarah may be the daughter of John Pearson but think this may be her in 1841:-

Name: Thomas Pearson
Age: 20
Estimated birth year: abt 1821
Gender: Male
Civil Parish: Settrington
Hundred: Buckrose
County/Island: Yorkshire
Country: England
Registration district: Malton
Sub-registration district: Rillington
Neighbors: View others on page

Book: 10
Folio: 14
Page Number: 11
Household Members:
Name Age
Thomas Pearson 20 - not born in county
Elizabeth Pearson 25
Sarah Pearson 4 Mo

..............which would mean her father was Thomas.

Seems as though Ruth Parkin was a proffesional witness as she is on a lot of the marriages.

This is what the marriage says on the London Marriages and Banns.

Name: Mary Plews
Spouse: James Pearion
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 8 Apr 1816**********************************
Parish: St Marylebone
Borough: Westminster
Register Type: Parish Register

It definately says Mary Plews is a Widow.

Thanks to all who replied, some very helpful tips for me to pursue. I know this may annoy some people, but I do have a fair amount of information on the Pearson family from certificates, census returns and other sources. I didn't post everything I know because it would have been too long a post so I kept it simple. Much of what I have is conflicting and quite confusing.
Thanks again.
