I have a sub to Find my Past, but cannot find Albert R. French b 1855.
His parents are William R. French and Emma.
On Ancestry, I can see them at Plumstead kent, but cannot get the details, as I don't belong to Ancestry.
Can anyone give me the info please
Thank you very much

A free search on Ancestry 1861 at:
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=8767
gets your hit as:

Name Parent or spouse names Birth Year Birthplace Relation Residence View Image
Albert R French William R,Emma 1855 city, Kent, England relation city, Kent

When you go to FMP, you really need the 1861 search screen.
Select the A-Z of record sets, filter to UK and start typing 1861 then click on the 1861 England, Wales & Scotland Census set'

Since the problem is most likely mistranscription of surnames, and forenames and ages are much easier to transcribe accurately, search for Albert R, b 1855, in the same h/h as Emma, living in Kent.

We get the following hits:
First name(s) Last name Birth year Birth county Registration district Parish County
Albert R Tomich 1855 Kent Lewisham Plumstead London, Kent
Albert Ovenden 1855 Kent Sevenoaks Penshurst Kent
Albert Riden 1855 Yorkshire Dartford Dartford Kent
Albert Shange 1855 Middlesex Gravesend Milton Kent
Albert Sidders 1855 Kent Bridge Wickhambreux Kent
Albert Waters 1855 Kent Maidstone Linton Kent

Only one of these is in Plumstead, so that's the one I would try first

====================

Dea has provided Ancestry's version of the info that uniquely identifies this page, viz:
Piece: 410; Folio: 71; Page Number: 22

One can just search for the census ref, with all the other fields blank, on both sites.
There are 27 names on this page (a couple of extra names must be scrunched in), spread over 7 surnames.
Ancestry/FMP agree on just 3 surnames - Callow, Griffiths, Hyam. For the other 4 they have:
Spalding/Holding, Goodling/Quadling, Thorne/Thornes, French/Tomich

=====================

It's very hard to guess the ref info, but if I had a clue like they lived Plumstead, then it's possible to guess the piece # is 410, and confirm this on the Ancestry search, and utilize it on the FMP search to get a unique result in this case.

So how do I guess - I go to:
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
and click on advanced search, and search for Plumstead within the reference rg9, and see the piece #s it kicks out, viz: 408-411.
I can try each of these on the known Ancestry hit, and see it was in rg9/410.

The census ref codes are ho107 for 1841-1851, and rg9 thru rg14 for 1861 thru 1911.
I could separate 1841/1851 by searching for all the words plumstead AND 1841 (or 1851, as required) within ref ho107.

Incidentally, when you check the image, you'll see rg9/410 on the PRO copyright slip in the margin of the image, and the page # printed on the page - there is no folio # showing (happens almost half the time) - it's stamped on the preceding page and applies to the page it's stamped on and the following page.
In 1841, there was an extra identifier - the book # - which also appears on the PRO copyright slip.
