Dianne Report 7 Jan 2016 23:16

Thomas Curtis was born in 1866 at Dublin, Ireland and married Rose Burton in 1884.
After Rose and daughter Sarah died, Thomas and son Frank immigrated to Canada between 1889-1892. Would someone know what ship they were on, or how I can look
at ships from Ireland at that time?

Thank-you!

Dianne

When was Frank born please?

Have you found them on Canadian census and if so, can we have the details please?
Quite often if we can find one record, Ancestry will link it to another.

Dianne, having just worked on your Fitzgerald thread ...

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/ancestors/thread/1357214

could you give the sources of your information?

just so that it can be verified

and as Detective says, more details than you are giving

and where you have looked for information

we need to know what you know, and how you know it, in order to help

JoonieCloonie Report 8 Jan 2016 01:20

outgoing passenger records are available from 1890 to 1960 at Ancestry and FindMyPast and they show sailings from Ireland

but they are by paid subscription (although you can do free searches to get basic results)

http://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-world-records/passenger-lists-leaving-uk-1890-1960

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=2997

(edited to fix the links)

they may not have sailed from Ireland

I checked out the following who sailed out of Liverpool for Quebec 1891 and 1893

Mr Curtis
T Curtis
Tho Curtis

with ages equating to births in 1866, 1867 and not stated

but none was travelling with another Curtis

I don't see them in the 1901 Canada census

the Canadian census should give a date of immigration, but it is often not quite reliable

I might suspect that these are the birth and death of Sarah

borh jul-sep 1886 Athy
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FBC2-XP5

died apr-jun 1890 Athy, birth 1887 (year would be based on age)
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FTHJ-W3L
(or that could be mother)

there is no Frank / Francis Curtis same place, but a 'male' Curtis 1890

Dianne Report 13 Jan 2016 00:58

Thanks again for looking for Frank Curtis, his daughter and family thought he was
born in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada in 1886 until last year I found his marriage in
Revelstoke, B.C. Canada saying his parents were Thomas Curtis and Rose Burton
who were born in Dublin, Ireland. There was no Francis Curtis who was born in
Woodstock, but found him in the Dublin records with his sister Sarah who died in 1889 and mother died in 1888. Thomas was on the 1901 Census in Woodstock and had married Annie Murphy in 1893, so Frank and Thomas left Dublin about 1889 or so to come to Canada.

Again thank-you for your help!

Joonie, I should add Frank went to the States before the 1901 Census, the came back
to Stratford, Ontario and worked for the railway, the moved to Revelstoke in 1911 and
lived there until he died in 1946. The only thing I wanted to know was the ship that
Frank and his Dad were on.

Oh my goodness ... Dianne, nothing you tell us quite adds up, and you leave out hugely important details! ... like ... his name ...

seriously, to have us searching for someone named Frank when you know his name was Francis Harold ...

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JD8T-HXX

>> Name Francis Harold Curtis
Event Type Marriage
Event Date 11 Nov 1925
Event Place Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada
Age 38
Marital Status Bachelor
Birth Year (Estimated) 1887
Birthplace Woodstock, Ontario
Father's Name Thomas Curtis
Mother's Name Rose Burton
Spouse's Name Vera Charlotte Olson
Spouse's Age 22
Spouse's Marital Status Spinster
Spouse's Birth Year (Estimated) 1903
Spouse's Birthplace Trout Lake, British Columbia
Spouse's Father's Name Charles Olson
Spouse's Mother's Name Hilma Auderson
Certificate Type License
Registration Number 25 09 296899

it says he was born in Woodstock! you think he was fudging?

your Frank's wife was definitely Vera Charlotte Olson? :-)

you have seen his death record?

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FLRG-5HK

Name Francis Harold Curtis

Birth Date 06 Jan 1886
Birth Year (Estimated) 1886
>> Birthplace Woodstock, Ontario

Spouse's Name Vera Charlotte Alson

of course, that info is only as good as the knowledge of the person who gave it

can you show us him on any Canadian census at all?

possibly not in Canada by 1891 census
left Canada before 1901 census (1900 US census destroyed - edit - no, 1890 was destroyed)
returned to Canada in time for 1911 census?
(in 1910 US census?)
should be in Revelstoke in 1921?

in 1911 he should have said his year of immigration ... he might not know, he might have said he was born in Woodstock, but if we don't know what he said, we don't know whether it is useful

the only Fran* Curtis born 1885-1889 that I see in the 1911 is in Welland Ontario

and I don't see your Frank anywhere in 1921

You say the only thing you want to know is 'X' but the fact is that you are working from assumptions and the information that does exist is conflicting, so you're asking that people search for something that may be completely wrong

here's one fact at least!

now we know what you know (except Frank's birth), and how you know it

Thomas Curtis in 1901 gives dob of 1866

Rose his wife was born in 1860 per her death record

so he married at 18 to a woman who was 24, which is unusual

1901 in Woodstock

Name: Thomas Curtis
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Married
Age: 34
Birth Day & Month: 16 Aug
Birth Year: 1866
>> Birthplace: Ontario
Relation to Head of House: Son-in-law
Racial or Tribal Origin: Irish
Nationality: Canadian
Michael Murphy
Thomas Curtis 34
Annie Curtis 34
Mary Curtis 7
Jered Curtis 5
Edward Curtis 3
Ethel Curtis 1

love the 1911 in Woodstock - but why has someone corrected the name to CURTICE?

Onnie Curtie 44 widowed
Kalrlam Curtie 17
Fied Curtie 15
Edward Curtie 13
Ethel Curtie 11
Madalene Curtie 9
Garden Curtie 6
Michael Marphy 85

so we have no chance to see a year of immigration declared by Thomas as he stated in 1901 that he was born in Ontario, and in 1911 he was deceased

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JXWH-NP5

Name Thomas Curtis
Event Type Death
Event Date 22 May 1906
Event Place Ingersoll, Oxford Co., Ontario
Gender Male
Age 40
Birthplace Ontario
>> Birth Year (Estimated) 1866

(image gives no family info)

do you have the marriage of Thomas Curtis and Annie Murphy that confirms somehow that he IS in fact Frank's father?

the one thing that seems to tie your Frank to Ireland is the marriage of Thomas Curtis and Rose Burton there, they being his declared parents when he married

it would be nice to know what he said on his 1911 and 1921 census returns re his birth and/or immigration, but I suppose he said he was born in Ontario ...

anyway, now we know almost as much as you do, if anybody else wants to pursue it

I'm assuming that if they came from Ireland, they came before 1890 ...

passenger lists for those dates held in Canada can only be viewed as scans of microfilms ... they have not been transcribed or indexed
