I am looking for George Prophet B1877 Chorlton. He had a twin brother John and 2 other brothers James B 1878 and William B 1881.
John was my Grandmother's father and I have all the family tree with this info except It would appear, that I have taken a wrong turn with George!

He appears on the 1901 census living with his grandmother and brothers as both parents died young. For ref his father is John Prophet b 1850 and his mother Maria b 1852.

I just cant find any trace of George in 1911 although there is a soldier showing as a serviceman during 1806-1915? soldier number 6278.

I went wrong by thinking that George Jennings prophet was my gg Uncle and I now know this is incorrect. So am wanting to re work this twig of the family tree.
Any help would be appreciated as I seem to have hit a brick wall.

Thanks
Florence

So far, I can't see the 1901 record you mention.

Just for our reference:
These will be the boys in 1891 with their grandmother.
(Ancestry has included the Traynor family next door in their transcription, so I've missed them out.)

Is this the family you are looking at - with Grandma in 1891? For reference

Seems odd his "twin" brother is born Stockport and George in Hulme?

Where was he in 1901 with his grandmother because I can't find him?

There is this death in South Africa. Could this be a possibility? :-

That would seem to tie in with the death in South Africa.

Reckon this is the same chap, although Service Number "different" probably a badly written 1 or 7. Here it's 6218, attestation transcript shows 6278, where the original looks as though the 1 has been re written, possibly over the top of an original 7?

Gazzetteer [2926: 2907-2614] the capital of the Orange Free State (Bloemfontein district; Free State). The city and district furnished commandos for the Boer forces (Cmdt P.J. Fourie; Cmdt W.J. Kolbe; Cmdt J.P. Ackerman; Cmdt J.J. Boshoff). As British forces advanced from the west, President M.T. Steyn left by train on the evening of 12 March 1900 and the city was abandoned for Field Marshal Lord Roberts to make a ceremonial entry on the following day. In the early hours of that morning, a party of volunteers commanded by Maj A.G. Hunter-Weston, RE, cut the railway line north of the city; on their return, the party clashed with a Boer piquet and for saving one of the party who became unhorsed, Sgt H. Engleheart, 10th (Prince of Wales's Own) Hussars, was awarded the Victoria Cross. It became the focus for British reinforcements and a military reorganization and on 3 May Roberts left the city to begin his advance on Pretoria*. A prisoner of war camp for burghers and a white concentration refugee camp were established here. From May 1901 the defence of the city and surrounding area was entrusted to some 3,000 South African Constabulary. I think Florence must have meant the 1891 census rather than the 1901 census.

hello again peeps.

can I just say a huge thankyou to you all. This seems to have solved my mystery of why I couldn't find a marriage or him in 1911 or 1901. yes sorry earlier I did mean 1891!

very interesting to read about him in south Africa and my father will enjoy hearing this about him. My grandmother never said her father was a twin and I only discovered this a few years ago after my grandma had died!

Thanks again for all your replies and info, very much appreciated.
