Hi Austin

Thank you for that. You're right. It doesn't give me any answers, but it is a fascinating insight into life at that time and the characters of some of my ancestors.

Many thanks.

Doesn't give you any answers, but thought this might be of interest (note that Frederick was a house painter on the 1911 census, so this is likely him:

London Daily News - Monday 04 February 1907

HUSBAND COOKS, WIFE WORKS

To explain why Frederick Venables, a decorator, of Barking, was summoned at Stratford on Saturday for assaulting his wife, the latter said she went to work because her husband had no work, and he did the cooking. On January 25th, when she came home she complained that he had got boiled fish instead of fried for dinner, and he thereupon caught her by the throat and tried to strangle her. He tried a second time but she got away.

Defendant said it was all brought about by the wife's nagging. She was always going on at him.

Mr Tabrum: It seems to me you were very foolish to get married. Now you are beginning to find it out. Defendant will be bound over to keep the peace. Go away and do the best you can.

Hi and thank you to you all - many apologies for the delay in responding - emergency at home I'm afraid.

Yes, you are all quite exact. Edith Mary Miller listed on the 1911 census, unmarried with a daughter of the same name is correct and my Mother's natural mother. She was the older sister of Margaret Venables and the 1933 marriage is my Mum's - she was adopted by the Howletts.

It is family rumour that she emigrated to Canada - no solid proof - not yet.

Thanks again for all your suggestions.

If you have a sub to Ancestry, Suzy, perhaps it might be worth contacting one of the private tree owners to ask about Edith Miller/Howlett ..

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 2 Jan 2016 13:00

Me neither?

There is also a divorce and Ancestry 1903 (final Decree 1905) for Charles Thomas Carr- but his father is listed as George.

The 1933 marriage is for Edith M Howlett - adopted??? or former marriage??

I don't see a Miller / Howlett marriage for either of the Ediths, mother or daughter.
Nor Carr/Howlett.

So maybe she was adopted after 1911 census.

A few private trees on Ancestry have a Edith Mary Miller born 1911 East Ham with the surname Howlett in brackets.

An open tree has the same Edith (with no parents named) born 2nd Feb 1911 marrying a William James Burrows in 1933.

What is the reason you think she may have emigrated to Canada in particular?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 2 Jan 2016 11:57

Presumably the daughter's birth, although the 1911 census says East Ham:

Is this the 1911 record you refer to, Suzy?

It doesn't say she's a barmaid, but it's the only 1911 record I can see which fits the other details you give.
It appears she had a daughter of the same name.

Thank you very much Andy and PricklyHolly for your prompt help, but unfortunately I have that record and it is another Edith Mary Carr married to an Albert Carr a journeyman carpenter. Sorry should have remembered to put that in my post. I was absolutely convinced it was the correct record, but sadly no.

Thanks again.

Hi, I am trying to trace Edith Mary Miller, b 3 Oct 1886 in East Ham Essex to Richard and Louise Miller (nee Coombes). In 1911 she gave her occupation as barmaid and on 2 Aug 1919 she married Charles Thomas Carr (a divorcee, who was a seaman, aged 47, and the son of Thomas Carr deceased) in the The Parish Church of North Woolwich. It is possible she may have emigrated to Canada but I cannot find any emigration records. She is not on the 1939 Register and I have failed to find a death record. Any information on either her or her husband would be most gratefully received. Thank you.
