Hi

I've just got a Will from Scotlandspeople and for some reason I can't find any of the people in the Will in the censuses

The will was made out 24 Jan 1879

I have a Mrs Janet Douglas of St Margaret's Station Jock's Ledge near Edinburgh

Margaret Charles of 7 Portugal St Governor Sq London

The will is for James Leadbetter of 26 Causewayside Edinburgh

I know some people have a way of putting the addresses in but I've never been able to sort it out so if someone can do this for me it would be appreciated as I've not been able to find theses people in the 1871 census
Whilst I know in those day people moved around a lot I'm hoping they can be found in 1871/1881

Thank you

Janet Douglas

in 1871 she could have been Janet Henderson
so I think the 1881 census would be the better of the two
I have got a marriage for her to Henderson but he died and according to the will She remarried

Thank you

I think you have her she didn't marry and as she was a servant in 1871 it sound right that she is still a servant.

Jock's LODGE is an area of Edinburgh, Scotland. It centres on the junction of London Road and Willowbrae Road (part of the A1 trunk route to London), Portobello Road and Restalrig Road South (Smokey Brae) and is an alternative name for the Meadowbank / Piershill area. Restalrig village lies to its north.

Not seeing a St Margarets Station via Google - but we are 100+ years on. If you note above - Jocks Lodge is an alternative name for the Meadowbank area, so maybe an address somewhere in that area

There is/was this -
St Margaret's Railway Depot
Meadowbank, Edinburgh

As you say we are 100 years on

Is there any chance you could look for James Leadbetter
he was at 26 Causewayside he could have had a Georgina Charles b 1821 living with him and may be a Georgina Richardson Donaldson 1856 they were living with him 1851/61 can't find them 1871

Yes Those are the ones

But as you say can't find Georgina in 1871 who is living with James Leadbetter with Georgina Richardson Donaldson b 1856 Edinburgh at 26 Causewayside in 1879

Grand Niece Georgina Richardson this is the only name mentioned on census only in the Will has the name Donaldson come up Not been able to find out who her parents were

"But as you say can't find Georgina in 1871 who is living with James Leadbetter with Georgina Richardson Donaldson b 1856 Edinburgh at 26 Causewayside in 1879 "

Sorry, I don't understand your sentence above, Sylann.

If you mean Georgina Charles, I suspect it's the same Georgina Charles in 1861, 1871, and 1881, with age mistranscribed in one or more of them.

She's described as "niece" in all three census records.
In 1861 and 1871 her birthplace is Newlandrigg; (nowadays spelled Newlandrig) which is just beside Borthwick , which is given as POB in 1881.

Here she is in 1841, just for the record:

Georgina Charles
in the 1841 Scotland Census
Name: Georgina Charles
Age: 15
Estimated birth year: abt 1826
Gender: Female
Where born: Midlothian, Scotland
Civil Parish: Edinburgh St George
County: Midlothian
Address: No 13 S Charlotte Street
Parish Number: 685/1
Household Members:
Name Age
Margaret Richardson 40
Georgina Charles 15

SP doesn't show her birth.

Your Georgina Richardson Donaldson is also there in 1871 posted above, transcribed as Mcdonaldson..

I don't think the birth years can be taken too much at face value.

Just a long shot - there's this marriage - perhaps she was known as Jessie ???

1863 DONALDSON ROBERT
RICHARDSON JESSIE
LEITH SOUTH EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 692/02 0030

Sylann Report 30 Dec 2015 17:05

Thank you for your help

Their is a Georgina Charles b 1826 Borthwick who is the niece of James Leadbetter
and their is a Georgina Richardson (Donaldson) b 1856 Grand niece of James Leadbetter

1841 census Margaret Richardson 40
Georgina Charles 15 is Margaret's daughter .

bit confusing I answered whilst you were putting 1871 census down which does seem to be the right family apart from Georgina McDonald ??

But it could link up with Georgina Richardson Donaldson b 1856 ???

Yes I've realized with the 61 & 71 censuses the ages are way out
Not so sure about the marriage

But it has give me some thing to work with
