Thanks ArgyllGran and Jude for the info re: maiden names in Scotland. I learn something new every day.

Evidently the same thing applies here in the province of Quebec. My friend went to Quebec to visit her sister who was in hospital. She couldn't find her at first until she was told that her sister was registered in her maiden name even though she'd been married many years. It's what they do in Quebec.

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 12 Dec 2015 07:26

To reiterate what AG says; 25% of my lot are from Scotland and it is common to find long married women listed under their maiden name in the census transcripts.

That looks very likely, Gins.

Andrew in 1841, with mother Mary, presumably her sister Isabella, their father John, and possibly Ritchie niece & nephew, as Mary's mother was a Ritchie.
(One of the 2 young Ritchies is presumably mistranscribed as Jean - unless they're not sisters, in which case it might be correct! - EDIT: One will be the John listed in 1851.)

Re Mary listed as Blacklock after marriage:

In Scottish records, women were often listed under their maiden names even if married.

Even nowadays, a married woman in Scotland can legally use either surname.

Thank you for putting me right ..no wonder I was getting nowhere

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 11 Dec 2015 16:04

So the surname was Blacklock not Blackburn. The children were born in the 1800's not 1900's. Place names were Tundergarth not Thundergarth and St. Mungo not St. Mango.

Now you say that Mary married George Richie in 1849 (actually you said 1949) but on the 1851 census she's still Mary Blacklock even though living in the same household as George.

Edit: They do seem to have married in 1849. Wonder why she was listed as Mary Blacklock on the 51 census?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Dec 2015 15:48

I don't see the birth of any Andrew Black* in Dumfries-shire1838-45, with a mother named Mary.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Dec 2015 15:45

Do you mean Blacklock????

Mary's birth ??:
06/12/1814 BLACKLOCK MARY
JOHN BLACKLOCK/JEAN RITCHIE FR432 (FR432) F
ST MUNGO /DUMFRIES 847/00 0010 0161

Thomas's birth:

26/12/1843 BLACKLOCK THOMAS
/MARY BLACKLOCK FR69 (FR69) M TUNDERGARTH /DUMFRIES 851/00 0020 0029

As it mentions mother's name but no father's name, Yes, it looks as if Mary was unmarried. (Or possibly widowed and not remarried, I suppose - although in that case she wouldn't be the Mary born in 1814).

If you spend a few credits on ScotlandsPeople, you can view the image of the original parish record - though they don't usually give much information.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Dec 2015 15:39

Assuming you mean 1843 for Thomas, and 1840 for Andrew, I don't see any such births on ScotlandsPeople, Tundergarth (NB - not spelled Thundergarth. And it's St Mungo, not St Mango.).

Not in 1943 and 1940 either, for that matter.

Where did you find the information?

Hello
I have a MARY BLACKBURN 1815 St Mangos Dumfries
had a son THOMAS BLACKBURN 1943 Thundergarth Dumfries
In 1949 married George Ritchie
Would anyone know if Thomas was born to a single mum or had Mary been married to someone else
Think she also had a son ANDREW 1940
Thanks for your help
