Chasing information on my great grandfather. Know some things about his life in New Zealand but very little of his life in England. Born 1.01.1849 @ Scarborough.. His parents were William David, Stonemason, of the City of York and Elizabeth of Langtoft. John had siblings Sarah Ann, Elizabeth, David Robert, Henry and James Henry.
Elizabeth was married to John Thomas Atkinson and David Robert married Kate Dennis.

Although father William seems to be a soliciter's clerk. Rather different from a stonemason!

Where did you get his DOB & his father's occupation from? As you don't give his MMN, you probably don't have the birth cert.

Neil Report 6 Nov 2007 11:38

Can anyone provide me with info on my great grandfather John William Bannister ( Banister ) born in Scarborough in 1849 and died in Hokitika New Zealand 26 November 1924? He was shown as the son of William Bannister in the English Census of 1861 and was 12 years of age. His brothers and sisters were Sarah Ann 13, Elizabeth 7, and David Robert 5. He was a lawyer at some stage in England and immigrated to the South Island of New Zealand where he became a school teacher and set up the first school on the West Coast of NZ.

The transcription of the 1851 census posted by Margee shows Elizabeth his mother as born in Thwing, Yorkshire (original could say that - which to the uninitiated seems a strange name). However family search shows the following baptism in Thwing, which would also fit her age shown. Thwing is about 5km from Langtoft

Elizabeth Bannister
England Births and Christenings
Name Elizabeth Bannister
Gender Female
Christening Date 17 Jul 1825
Christening Place THWING,YORK,ENGLAND
Father's Name William Bannister
Mother's Name Sarah

Cynthia thank you for this. I do think William was a Solicitor's clerk not a stonemason. I believe that profession was further up the chain. The info I received this on was an excerpt from the family bible.
thanks
Neil

Thank you for this information.
I have tracked down a fair amount of information on John William and his family but lose him when he migrated or was sent to New Zealand.
Thanks
Neil.
