Actually it was AustinQ who originally dug it out. ;-)

It just goes to show how we all 'feed' off and work with each other. :-D

JoonieCloonie Report 9 Dec 2015 01:54

good heavens, Detective, you found the record!

all I did was back up to the top level for these files in the catalogue system, like this, where it identifies Jill's record:

All departments
- HS - Records of Special Operations Executive <<<
- - HS 9 - Special Operations Executive: Personnel Files (PF Series)
- - - HS 9/700 - Special Operations Executive personnel files. Information on individual subjects and...
- - - - HS 9/700/4 - Jill Sheila Fitzgerald HERVEY - born 12.03.1924

and then I thought I was just kidding :-D

very good find and very interesting! and you're welcome of course :-)

Although the credit should go to JoonieCloonie - Thank you :-D :-D

I've pm'd JoonieCloonie and Detective because of the sensitive nature of this post, and thanked them for thinking outside the box.
It worked!
:-D

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 1 Dec 2015 15:12

that could well be Detective! - tinkering, they seem to do quite a lot - yes it is there now, but it absolutely was not last night :-)

'other household member' Beatrice Hervey search produces no results in Crosby

I wonder whether she might have been in hospital?

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 1 Dec 2015 11:15

Re the 1939 Register - the 'living with' boxes are still there on the Advanced Search.

Other household member
Other household member's first name(s)
Other household member's last name(s)

Perhaps they were tinkering when you accessed the site?

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 1 Dec 2015 10:55

Well done Joonie - she might well have been involved at Bletchley.
.....
Thousands of wireless operators, many of them civilians but also Wrens, WAAF personnel and members of the ATS, tracked the enemy radio nets up and down the dial, carefully logging every letter or figure.
http://www.bletchleypark.org.uk/content/hist/
.....

Every now and again, stories surface in the media where a female relative is revealed to have worked there. They had said absolutely nothing about it while they were alive. They took the Official Secrets Act extremely seriously!

How ever, before making assumptions it might be best to see what Nichola can tease out of the 'Description'. On the other hand, there's only 9 years to go before the records can be opened ;-)

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 30 Nov 2015 23:55

has FMP been reading here and discovered my trick??

I just went to do a 'living with' Beatrice Hervey search ............. and those search term boxes are no longer on the search form

!!

in any event a search for her on Waterloo Road produces no results so she must have been staying elsewhere in 1939

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 30 Nov 2015 23:52

that is rather fascinating!

Shades of

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bletchley_Circle :-)

she might have been employed in a clerical position or the like

The document must have been 'closed' in 1947. So she'd have been c23 at the time? Far too young to have been a 'clandestine' war worker.
You could ask for the 'open' description!

Nicola'S

Nicola'S Report 30 Nov 2015 17:33

Such memories!
'Harlyn' was the lovely home of her godparents where we visited as children.
Yes, SIMON became her married name and my maiden name.
I can't for the life of me think what the closed records at Kew can be related to;hope it's nothing sinister! What a mystery.
Yes, she was six months old on the return passage to India; I've got all that, thank you.
William and Beatrice's only child was born on 12th September 1939 - how strange that he is not recorded on the passenger list?? The story goes that they were waiting to sail to India from Liverpool [now it all makes sense with the Crosby connection] and that is why he was born there.
The 'Waterloo Road' stacks up on son's BC.
I apologise that I didn't put two and two together on this one; but you've made it happen, so thank you!
:-D

22 Waterloo Road is also the address Catherine Bailey was living at on the 1939 register.

Looks as though Beatrice was also living in Crosby- it has her listed alone, but as the household has no name attached I wonder if she is actually living in the Bailey household with William?:

1939 register:
Household
Crosby M.B., Lancashire, England
Beatrice Hervey 1912

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 30 Nov 2015 00:22

William may have been just visiting ...

possibly mother Kathleen had a brother who married a Catherine and had a daughter Kathleen ... :-)

I think mistranscriptions are not uncommon, so you might find that the original contains something that makes more sense

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 29 Nov 2015 23:38

The register will give

Declared date of birth
Address
Occupation
Additional voluntary war occupation eg Air-raid warden

If does not give place of birth, name of employer or the relationship with other people in the household.
Looking at one I've downloaded, some of the occupations indicate the field of work eg
Labourer (Cable Manufacturer)
Clerk (Estate Office)
Millwright (Heavy __)

Nicola'S

Nicola'S Report 29 Nov 2015 23:24

That is just extraordinary! It is my grandfather.
But what on earth is he doing in Lancashire?
His marriage in 1934 is his second; my grandmother was his first wife.
His mother's maiden name was BAYLEY, and her first name was Kathleen. But she died a 'Hervey' in Sussex in 1930.
It all looks like such a close match but somehow it is also wrong. Does this site give any more information if one pays for more info??
Thank you so much so far.

:-)

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 29 Nov 2015 20:13

this William has the right year of birth for yours?

Catherine Bailey 1888 Crosby M.B. Lancashire
Kathleen Bailey 1909 Crosby M.B. Lancashire
William F Hervey 1898 Crosby M.B. Lancashire

(his death in Chichester 1981 dob 1898
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVZ9-64BH
his marriage in India 1934
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGV5-KSG)

(the search found William F Hervey in Crosby but the 'living with' search would not find the other household members until I narrowed the search to simply Hervey in Crosby)

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 29 Nov 2015 19:48

best way to do this, and I believe you can do it without a sub at FMP

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/1939register

use 'advanced search'

fill in *only* the 'living with' part at the bottom, putting the name Lewis Barber in Tenterden MB

the results will show you the person you named + all other persons whose records are open

the list of names is

Jaqueline K M Barber 1900 Tenterden M.B. Kent
Lewis Barber 1885 Tenterden M.B. Kent
Eveline K Caton 1895 Tenterden M.B. Kent
Florence S Goulder 1888 Tenterden M.B. Kent
Florence B Navine 1859 Tenterden M.B. Kent
