Have you looked for them on the census? Do you know "your" Alfred's mother's first name?

Thank you for your help John .

JoonieCloonie Report 8 Nov 2015 23:06

to clarify I think 'may 26th 1894' is the date on the death record in the index

which fits with a birth in June quarter

John - you are costing yourself a lot of money for nothing!!

Everything available here or at Ancestry when it comes to the GRO births, marriages, deaths index is available free of charge at

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

except for some later years that are not fully transcribed as yet (and only up to 1980)

That Alfred death is there at freebmd:

Deaths Dec 1969
DAVIES Alfred 26My1894 Stoke/T 9b 1419

for mother's surnames, they only appear in the index after mid-1911

before that, you need the birth certificate to get confirmation of the names of both parents

(unless there are parish baptism records available somewhere on line that name the parents, and someone here will usually be able to tell you about that for any particular area)

Thank you JoonieCloonie , I sometimes go up the national archives in Stoke ,they have all the births deaths and marriage on microfiche and all the local news paper as far back as 1920s ,there is also books for all the electoral registers dating back to 1920s they are similar to census records .

Hurrahforjohn

Hurrahforjohn Report 10 Nov 2015 22:34

Yes JoonieCloonie I did ,all I asked for was the mothers maiden name on the 2 birth certificates so I could match the death certificate up with one of them . sorry if I have coursed some unpleasantness , I will be alright now :-(

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 10 Nov 2015 23:09

no prob with you John, you gave the info you had which is what we like to see :-)

(never hurts to say where it came from just in case - some info offered as gospel turns to be pretty weird and wonderful sometimes!)

sometimes we post info that we know the person asking has, just so we can see it in black and white with all the details (like census records)

Luckily someone with more experience than I at hunting up local records (I really should figure out what Ancestry has for starters) ... good for MarieCeleste ... found you exactly what you were looking for!

now just remember not to go paying out good money for free stuff :-)

JC - I believe Ancestry has nothing in the way of local rego office indexes - you should go to:
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd

================

Hfj - I know nothing abt who your gran is - this is just an example from the page of hits in front of me:

Staffordshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1926
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
DAVIES Alfred SHAW Doris Wellington, St Luke Stoke-On-Trent 36/12/059

For a church wedding (rather than a rego office wedding) the church's official register is later deposited in some archive, usually the local records office, and one can see it (or an image of it) there.

The local ref usually has 3 elements:
1) a code identifying the church (or subdistrict for Bs & Ds) - StaffsBMD decodes these for you (not all local indexes do);
2) a sequence # for the register (sequenced within the code);
3) an entry # or page # - usually entry #s are used for marrs (so one can say who wed whom) - here page #s are used for Alfred's birth.

Knowing the entry # makes look up of a marr at the local record office quite easy - rego office m.certs have to be bought from the local office or the GRO.

On FreeBMD, I can click on Alfred's page # and see the other names on his GRO page - e.g.:

Births Jun 1894 (>99%)
Cartlidge Frank Douglas Stoke T. 6b 234
Davies Alfred Stoke T. 6b 234
etc

Here's the corresponding local hits:

Staffordshire Birth indexes for the years: 1894
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
CARTLIDGE Frank Douglas Shelton Stoke-On-Trent WALKER SHE/097/097
DAVIES Alfred Shelton Stoke-On-Trent SUMNER SHE/097/097

so clearly the 3rd element of the local ref isn't an entry # here.

If I click on the "Stoke T" link in the FreeBMD hit, then the more info "here" link, I get:

STOKE UPON TRENT REGISTRATION DISTRICT
Sub-districts : Fenton, Hanley, Lane End, Longton, Shelton, Stoke upon Trent, Stoke Rural.
Registers now held by : Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire (Newcastle).
[plus a list of places in the district]

So it would be fairly easy to guess what the subdistrict code SHE stood for.
