Carole ...............

I assume that if they moved to NZ, then the Brits might not have received notice of their deaths, and so it is possible that they could be closed records on the 1939 Register.

Another possibility is mis-transcription of names ........... people have found all kinds of mis-spellings!

Thank you Sylvia. I now assume my mother Dorothy's name will not be there due to her age. But it still doesn't explain why I can't find her mother (using all possible surnames) or stepfather. Oh well, another brick wall to overcome.
All three moved to NZ in the 1940's and died there, would that make any difference?
Thank you for your time and explanation.
Regards,
Carole

Carole

The 1939 Register did cover everyone in the UK, but many names are closed to viewing .......... that is people born in or after 1915 but where there is no record of death.

The records were continuously updated until the 1990s, which is why you may find women under a second or third married name. My great aunt shows with the name of the man she married in 1951, even though her first husband was still alive and living with her in 1939. On the other hand, my brother's name is showing in full even though he was only 12 years old, because they obviously had updated after his death in 1991.

Also, many children were evacuated in September 1939, during the so-called Phony War but their names will be closed to viewing.

Good morning from Australia, I am back on line. Thank you so much for your time with my family. Yes, you have the correct ones.
Margee, Percival's first wife was Florence also, that is why it seems confusing. Also thank you for the Canadian information of cousin's name and address, every little bit helps.
But it all brings me back to where were they all in 1939? I thought the new listing was supposed to cover everyone in UK? Or do I have it wrong?
Thank you again for your time, it is much appreciated.

Thank you Margee. My Florence went to Canada in 1922, so this won't be the correct family. She went under her first married surname of Wright, and came back in 1928 under the surname Hassall.

Thank you AustinQ and MarieCeleste.
Yes those entries for Dorothy and her Mother are correct. And I can see the death for the other Dorothy is not mine. I was hoping the 1939 listings would show exactly where my family were living at that time. Dorothy was sent away to boarding school in 1939. I don't know the address her parents were in at that time. Should have been around Aylesbury area. Percival Loe Aldridge born Oxford 1878, and Florence Ellen nee Day born 1896 in Lytham. Florence's surname could have been Hassall or Aldridge, or even Wright at a push!

If you have Dorothy's exact date of birth you can make a more accurate search for her. Just looking at one of your previous posts, I presume this is Dorothy's Mother (The birth date may also help in searching the 1939 register)

Thank you AustinQ and Shirley. AustinQ, all the info you have given me is just what I was after. It has shown me the Dorothy is not the one I am looking for.
My Dorothy was born in Canada but was back in UK in 1939. Her Hassall relatives came from Chester area so I was wondering if she was with any of them.
I have to close off now as I am going out. Am in Australia so different time frame to UK. Thanks so much for your help. Regards, Carole.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 6 Nov 2015 08:03

I'm not entirely sure what you mean- are you sure the Dorothy in Nantwich is the one you are looking for?

I don't see a birth record for a Dorothy born in 1925- but there are others (including the one in Nantwich) that are born a year either side. The other possibles may not show on the 1939 register due to the 100 year privacy rule.

The Dorothy in Nantwich appears to be the daughter of Alexander Hassell and Florence Cooper. Alexander died in 1926, and Florence remarried to Frederick Faulker in 1931. (but you would need certificates to confirm this)

On the 1939 register there are two more records that are closed- one of these may be Dorothy's sister, Joan who was born in 1925.

Opening the register record will tell you occupations, exact birth dates, possibly previous names.
