In Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management holds birth records (1864-1877), marriage records (1864-1930) and death records (1864-1877 and 1908-1955). Nominal indexes and digital images to the above records are available on the Nova Scotia Historical Vital Statistics Web site.
https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/

Records of births from October 1, 1908, marriages from 1931 and deaths from 1956 are held by:
Service Nova Scotia: Vital Statistics
PO Box 157
Halifax, NS
B3J 2M9
http://novascotia.ca/sns/access/vitalstats.asp

NS ran out of money, so suspended civil registration for a while.
Since having BMD certs is useful for getting passports, etc., when the suspension was lifted, provision was made for late registrations, and one can come across rego's that are 50 y late - it's not too common, but it's certainly not rare.

For Stockport BMDs, esp pre-1912, http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/ is a very useful complement to the usual GRO BMD index.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Robert Henry Smith was from Halifax, Nova Scotia and came to Belfast, Northern Ireland as a young man. He married an Eliza Dougan from Scotland.

They had a large family and Robert like many men in Belfast worked at the Harland and Wolff shipyard - the builders of the RMSTitanic.

I have knowledge of my family tree back several hundred years, thanks to my father's family. The links to Caerdane are the same family and has provided some excellent research and information.

We are also related to the Purdy and Griffin families of Pugwash. Malagash and Cumberland County. The family was from Westchester, White Plains NY and before that England, UK. i believe that we are connected to the Purdy House (loaned to George Washington) ref: The battle of White Plains and still in existence today. Although it appears the family divided at this time. Thanks very much for the census information, it is very helpful and I have not seen this before.

I have currently no information on Eliza Dougan, Robert Henry Smith's wife.

The connection to Stockport is that my great aunt and her husband moved there from Belfast - their surname was Boyle. I have no information about Andrew Smith, son of Robert Henry Smith (posted by Margaret - ref: Andrew Smith of Belfast N Ireland married to Edith Mason).

A tree on Ancestry says that he was born 1854, Pugwash, Nova Scotia. Parents Jacob Griffin Smith & Joanna R. Spinney.

If that's the case this would be him on the 1871 census:

Welcome to the boards Valerie.

It would help if you explained yourself a little more. I think your title and opening post could be read several ways.

Do you mean Robert Henry Smith originally of Belfast, Ireland married an Eliza Dougan originally of Scotland perhaps in Nova Scotia? Or they moved to NS?

Or Robert married Eliza in Scotland? Or something completely different?

When are you talking about?

What are you wanting to know? The more we know from you, the more we can hopefully help you.

Where in the province is Belfast NS? I can find an Antrim, 20km past Halifax airport, but I don't see any Belfast.
