Hi I have been given an old photo of a relative about 1930 possibly 1940 of a policeman in uniform. He has numbers 172 around the collar of the jacket. Is there anyway I could find out about the identity of this man.
Most likely Yorkshire or Boston area possibly Sleaford

Whoever gave you the photo must have had a reason

What other info do you have on this matter?

The photo is in a very old family Album and no one thought to write who these people were. Sadly no one is alive who would remember

Thank you

A relative of mine in Australia found a very similar photo and actually wrote to the relevant Police Authority, who were able to give her the policeman's name from their archive records. As it was before we were connected through this site, I wasn't able to tell her that I had the same photo and knew exactly who he was!

Might be worth contacting the Police Forces that you think are likely ones.
