His n.o.k. is Mrs John McC??? [site just went down] in Newport Mon - maybe a marr'd sis, or a remarr'd mum.

With an R surname, I wouldn't expect his service file to come online for another couple of years.

mgnv Report 19 Oct 2015 08:56

I received a pm from Sylann - mainly to thank me, but she did mention 2 new facts:
1) nok on army documents was his cousin John McCauley, think he went to Canada 1910,
[It's a bit ambiguous as to who Sylann thinks went in 1910 - in 1921 Thos said 1907.]

2) Margaret Ann Richardson 1869 Ontario who married George Fligg was in Wellington Center in 1871 aged 2 according to ancestry
[I can confirm this - it's easiest to present my reaearch in chronological order, i.e., backwards]

Sorry for the delay in the rest of my interrupted post - my son came off the island so we spent the evening together.

Re: "Now if I've got this right..." - yes, you've got it right, but the details were delayed as per above.

Mostly I'm using:
http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/Pages/census.aspx
However, whenever I can't find someone, or I find too many, I search on Ancestry (as LAC use the Ancestry transcriptions) and then respell stuff - Joshephine springs to mind, or else I add an exact age, or Garafraxa or whatever as a keyword.

Ontario Farmland

Canada had 2 major wars with the US - the War of the American Revolution and the war of 1812-1814. There are 2 major invasion routes into Canada - the New York-Montreal corridor via the Hudson valley-Lake Champlain (tried unsuccessfully by both sides), and into the Niagara peninsula, either at the Niagara end or the Detroit end, and then across SW Ont to Toronto.
The US used this successfilly in 1812-14, leading to the burning of Toronto.

After the war, Canada was keen to populate SW Ontario with farmers who could double as militia if needed. So the land was surveyed as quick as possible and, as soon as the survey was done, it was opened up for settlement. Meanwhile the surveyors moved onto the next bit. The pattern that developed was for the land to be split into townships - 8m x 10m was a typical bigish size, but there's a huge variation. Most twps were split into numbered concession strips, 1.25 m wide, and each strip was split into lots, 0.25 m wide, with roads running between concession strips, and occassionally between lots. These 200ac lots were usually split into two 100 acre lots, each with frontage on a concession road.

Anyway, this piecemeal development leads to piecemeal farm addresses, and one really needs a concession map to sort it out.
