Thank you everyone. I think now I will have to 'put this to bed'. In my own mind I am reasonably satisfied that the Dorothy Gertrude born 1906 Romsey and the Dorothy Gertrude who died in 1982 age 75 Surrey South Eastern District is the correct one. This family has really been a challenge and I am grateful for all the help you folks have given.

The children from Robert l Smith and Dorothy's family were born to mum nee Elcock so it doesn't look as though she was married before.

There are these two male Elcock's who married ladies with the forename Dorothy G. so either one of these could die as Dorothy G. Elcock:-

ELCOCK FRANK G — — 1941 England & Wales marriages 1837-2008 Conway, Caernarvonshire, Wales

ELCOCK RALPH W — — 1941 England & Wales marriages 1837-2008 Loughborough, Leicestershire, England

Don't worry Prickly Holly - maybe if I am lucky someone with Find my Past may see this. As the 'other' Dorothy Gertrude married in Wton I thought that maybe as the correct Dorothy Gertrude lived Romsey, Hampshire, if she was still in that area in 1932 she would not very likely be hopping up to Wolverhampton to get married !! Just a thought !

I don't have FMP........so I can't help you with that one.

I did consider that PricklyHolly particularly as she was 30 when she married Robert Smith but there was no way of finding this out.

I have just received an email from find my past regarding electoral rolls being online. I am not a find my past member and am wondering if Dorothy Gertrude's whereabouts could be ascertained in 1932 from these electoral rolls bearing in mind she was born in Romsey, Hampshire?

Perhaps that Dorothy Gertrude Elcock had been married before??

Edit: Or maybe she wasn't born in England or Wales?

I am puzzled that I cannot find the births of two Dorothy Gertrude Elcocks and yet the marriage to Robert L Smith has Dorothy G Elcock. Completely bamboozled !!! Thank you everyone for trying to solve this.

The American chap on Ancestry has the correct Dorothy Gertrude Elcock.

But he has made the mistake of marrying her off to Richard L Smith in 1936 Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.

There is this Dorothy G, who would have been aged 21 in 1936:

Births Mar 1915 ELCOCK Dorothy G Smout Bridgnorth 6a 1021

MargaretM Report 9 Oct 2015 14:59

So she's not his ancestor. An ancestor is someone from whom you descend.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 9 Oct 2015 14:56

There is a Dorothy AMY Elcock registered Romsey 1st qtr 1906, is this the one the American has latched on to?

Births Mar 1903 ELCOCK Dorothy Amy Romsey 2c 107

EDIT: No, she married someone else by the looks of it:

Marriages Jun 1929
Elcock Dorothy A Sheppard Romsey 2c 267
Sheppard Francis H Elcock Romsey 2c 267

Sorry Margee I am confusing everyone. Dorothy Gertrude was indeed born September not October ( I was typing from memory as I do not have the birth cert in front of me). Althiugh she is an ancestor of my neighbour, she is not a DIRECT ancestor. If I remember correctly my neighbour's mother was a sister of Dorothy's mother.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 9 Oct 2015 14:46

You say that your neighbour has an ancestor, Dorothy Gertrude Elcock. Surely if she's his ancestor she must have had a child from whom he descends? Was this child illegitimate? He says she died with name Elcock.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 9 Oct 2015 14:44

Does the birth cert your neighbour has, reflect the same birthdate of 25th Sept 1906 that the 1982 Surrey death has ?

Name: Dorothy Elcock
Birth Date: 25 Sep 1906<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Date of Registration: Jun 1982
Age at Death: 75
Registration district: Surrey South eastern
Inferred County: Surrey
Volume: 17
Page: 0889

EDIT: presumably not, as you said she was born Oct 1906. or did you just mean REGISTERED Oct 1906?

Trying to help a naighbour with his problem. He has an ancestor Dorothy Gertrude Elcock born October 1906 in Romsey, Hampshire - an illegitmate child. He has found what he thinks is her death - Dorothy Gertrude Elcock died June 1982 aged 75 Surrey South Eastern Reg District. BUT he has a contact in the States who has their tree on ancestry and she has Dorothy as being born 22 March 1906 in the same place and marrying a Robert L Smith in 1936 and dying 1988 Portsmouth. My neighbour has got Dorothy's birth cert which clearly states October 1906 (in the workhouse). We have checked freebmd and ancestry for the birth of Dorothy Gertrude Elcock and only the one comes up - the Dorothy born Romsey in October 1906. We then checked the 1911 census for Dorothy Gertrude Elcock and just Dorothy Elcock born 1906. Still only the one from Romsey comes up. We tried the marriages and this time only one came up - the one who married Robert L Smith. We then checked the deaths and found the Romsey Dorothy dying 1982 (as above) and also found the death for the other Dorothy which is down as Dorothy Gertrude E Smith. I have tried googling obituaries for Dorothy Gertrude Elcock and just Dorothy Elcock and got nothing. Has anyone any suggestions as to exactly what we can do now to finally determine that the Dorothy born Romsey did NOT marry Robert L Smith ? Thanks for any thoughts you may have.
