Can anyone help, i have been looking for this family member for a a long time. All we have that he was born in Merionethshire. I think John Owen was born in either 1895 or 96. But unsure of his father. John Owen moved to Dorset as a young man and married Gladys Phillips in Poole. He was 55 when he died in Basingstoke. Would be grateful if this is anyone in your tree

HI all thank you. the marriage certificate witnesses were both Phillips Henry J Phillips and Lilian May Phillips. On the marriage certificate his name is John Owen, is it usual for people to miss out names on the certificate?

Yes that is the correct marriage. As there is a possibility of getting John Owen's wrong, i want to be sure that the John Robert i locate is correct.

Sandra

our ancestors play all kinds of tricks on us, on official documents as well as on censuses, electoral rolls, etc ...............

they adopt a middle name .......... OH's Welsh grandfather was born in the 1870s, he had no middle name, UNTIL the 1901 census when he suddenly has acquired one, and he used it ever after, even on his marriage certificate in 1909

they lose a middle name ................. or lose their first name so their middle name becomes the first one

they switch the order around, so you have to look for Robert John as well as John Robert

they decide they don't like their name and change it, eg, Emily to Emma, or always use a diminutive or pet name, eg John to Jack

they decide to use a pet name ............. my gt grandmother switches between Hannah and Annie. She was Hannah on her marriage certificate and on some of her children's birth certificates and censuses, but Annie on other birth certificates and censuses. That didn't help in finding her when she left my gt grandfather .......... it took help from on here to discover that she and her youngest daughter had not died :-D

I think they knew how much it would annoy us :-D
