David ............

did you Google "Phillipson, clockmakers, Ulverston"?

That's always a good first step in finding information when you are looking for other than genealogical help.

For example ........

someone posted a query on Ancestry back in 2001

My great great grandfather, Henry Phillipson, was a clockmaker. I believe Phillipsons were clockmakers in Ulverston, but I don't know when. Can you help? His wife was Sarah Westgarth, and my great grandfather, Aquilla Phillipson, was born near Hawkshead in 1845. It's said he had a brother George who went to America, and a sister, Priscilla. I can't find any trace of them in censuses or parish records until 1891. Do you have any information that might help?

this is one of the responses on that thread .................... it's all referred to on Google .............

The Phillipson family of clockmakers are well documented , in Brian Loomes Westmorland Clockmakers he devotes a chapter to them starting with a John in 1720’s.
There are a number of Henry’s but a Henry Phillipson B1754 D1834 (had 3 wives)worked with Jonas Barber clockmaker of Winster Westmorland (HP took overJB business after his death in 1802.) About 1803/05 HP moved to Ulverston ,there is mention of a few more Henrys in Ulverston. There is also information in the book- Jonas Barber of Winster clockmaker by B.W.Cave Brown Cave and Susan E Stuart. Clockmakers North Lancashire and South Westmorland .

There are at least 10 posts on Phillipson clockmakers on the first page of links that came up when I googled, and many more on successive pages.

Taken from a page on Google (looks like Henry snr. inherited the business):-

"A notable person in Winster's early history was Jonas Barber, the famous clockmaker. He worked from Bryan Houses from 1682-1720 and was succeeded by his son and grandson Jonas II and III. Jonas Barber III died in 1802 and left all his clockmaking materials to Henry Phillipson, who then moved to Ulverston. Every house of any importance had one or more of his grandfather clocks."
