I have been trying to trace my mothers family for years and always draw a blank . My maternal grandfather was Alexander WilliamRobert Bryson . On his birth certificate his parents are given as Robert Bryson and Eliza Gissing and his birth is given as being in Middlesex at 200 Dover street .in 1899.
By the time my grandfather Alex was married his father was diseased.and was named as having been secretary to British consul in Paris . He had also been a chemists traveller .
I cannot find any record of the marriage of Robert and Eliza and they are nowhere to be found on 1911 census. However Alick appears on 1911 census as a boarder near London . Hope someone can help !!

Hi , thanks for this ,all of you . Yes that much has been done before but can't see how I can go forward (or back) without information on what happened to Robert and Elliza and if they did in fact get married . I have trawled Genes reunited and Ancestry for hours over the years . Knowing my grandfather lied about his age on enlisting it makes me wonder how many other lies were told . I am so frustrated about all of this .

Have you got your grandfather's later marriage certificates? It would be interesting to know who he put for his father.

As Alexander's middle name is Robert, I don't think it likely that he forgot his own father's name was also Robert. So I wonder if by 1918 his mother had a new husband/partner. A Richard, who may have been secretary to the British Consul.

Though he does seem to be parentless when growing up.

I will try and get the marriage certificates for his later marriages . I
I have recently become friendly with my grandfathers daughter from his third marriage . She is my mothers half sister and is just 1 year older than me . She is the last of that generation but unfortunately hasn't much info on the family history.
She said that Alexander had a half brother so his mother Eliza must have married again .
