WW2 records are still held by the MOD. You'll find very little on line. You can apply for a copy at a cost of £30, or free if your mother-in-law/he/his widow can sign the forms. There may be quite a wait if he is deceased.

This is the link for obtaining UK service records:

Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.

Not much in the way of WW2 records on-line. Did find this on FindMyPast (it's also on Ancestry) but this man was held in Germany:

Prisoners of War 1939-1945 - British Army held in German territories

First name(s) A.
Last name Batty
Service number 14355141.00
Prisoner of war number 1756
Rank Private
Regiment The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry
Camp type STALAG
Camp number 11B
Camp location Fallingbostel
Country Great Britain
Record type Records
Record office Infantry and Army Educational Corps Record Office, York

I've no idea if prisoners captured in Italy would have been transferred to German camps?

I know that my father-in-law was in the army during the second word war and that he was taken prisoner in Italy but Genes reunited can't find one soldier by that name. :-(
