Hi Marie

You may well be right although Germaine did describe herself as being a "wife" in 1921 she went to Cherbourg

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 5 Sep 2015 15:44

Not seeing a marriage in the armed forces or British nationals overseas indices.

That was why I wondered about WW1, the army probably had a lot of other things to do and keeping tabs on soldiers marrying whilst over there may not have been a priority. There may be a record in France but not on-line.

There are two medal cards for men called Frank Thomas Brooks who were in the RAMC. Not necessarily yours but ......

Gerry Report 5 Sep 2015 15:37

Thank you Marie & Hey Jude

Germaine went back and forth to Cherbourg almost annually during 20s and 30s. The last trips were 1951 and 1952.

I suspect Germaine and Frank were married in France as I can find no trace in UK

I would be wary of this - Marian/Marion isn't an uncommon surname and this may be someone else altogether:

Numerous passenger lists for Germaine all giving birth year c1898. First one I see is in 1921, she's a French national and heading to 8 Amnor Road London.

Perhaps he met her during WW1?

Gerry Report 5 Sep 2015 01:30

Destination port was Cherbourg in 1929.

It also seems they had another child Francis L( born abt 1929) as he is with her on another trip to Cherbourg in 1938. At the moment I cannot find a record of Francis' birth.

Seems as though Frank always has to stay at home!

I have FMP but no luck so far on marriage

Time I went to bed. Thank you so much for your help

Gerry :-D

Some one with access to FMP or GR records may be able to find a marriage under the military records. A free search didn't throw one up.

Its possible that either they didn't marry, married later than you thought, or she was widowed and married under the first husband's surname.

French marriages are registered under the Departement. If the passenger list gave a destination address, that might be a clue. Similarly if you knew where Frank was stationed.

Is there anything on Familysearch? It may be too recent + their French BMD are a rather sketchy

Hi. Thanks for your help.

As I said in my update I have found Germaine born in France 1892 so I am inclined towards the Frank born about same time ie 1892 Essex.

I have now also found Germaine and Raymond going to Cherbourg in 1829

Well done!

Looking at some of the London ER, he is listed at the same address from 1918, so must have been born 1897 or before.

In 1920, a Dinah Brooks is also listed who may be a female relative

Gerry Report 4 Sep 2015 23:41

Raymond Charles Jules was born 21/3/1921 at 8 Amner Rd Battersea.
His father was Frank Thomas Brooks, an army dental Clerk
His mother was Germaine (or Jermaine) Suzanne Louise Marion

I can find no record of the marriage and without this I cannot identify the correct Frank Thomas.

Germaine (or Jermaine) Suzanne Louise Marion sounds French to me and I am wondering if they met in France as Frank was working in/for the army

Any ideas/help would be appreciated

Gerry
