Actually, malyon, some old PR do give quite a lot of information, especially the earlier ones. Have a look at the Durham Bishops Transcripts images on family search. This is an example from 1797:

Anne Benson, Birth Nov 27, bap Dec 25th, 2nd daughter of George Benson native of Brancepeth and Mary his wife, late Snaith, native of this Parish.

Andrea,

Without wishing to state the obvious, have you tried name variations for the surname?

Coleston for example? Remembering names were mainly spelt phonetically and not as originally intended, his baptism could be there but just not as you expect to find it spelt!

Where does Jonathon/Johnathon/John come in the order of Siblings? Is it possible he was a child out of wedlock and has the mothers name? Is it possible he was born to a different mother?

Just trying to explore all avenues available to you :-)

Hi Ive hit a brick wall in my family search. Ive got back on this branch to 1769 and a marriage between Jonathan colestone and Joanna Greene in Shepton Mallet, they went on to have several children two of whom were named David and Esther. The problem is cant find any birth for Jonathan, the closest ive come is a James Colestone born in Shepton Mallet in 1752 whose parents were David and Esther.

I have no idea if this is the same person, did people change theyre first names in the 1700s or did they have middle names and that is what hes chosen to use?? :-S

Any help/advice would be great
