Hi , can any one help me please, I have just got a cert of my grand parents marriage and on the cert it says my grand father ( ANTHONY JOSEPH COCKBURN )was a BANDSMAN in H V R and his father RICHARD THOMAS COCKBURN was a clothier colouil, indian army.

Would any one know what H V R stands for and what a clothier coloul,

Richard Thomas Cockburn also had on a cert of his daughter 's birth , she was born in india ,that he was in the ( i think it is spelled like this ,can not read it very well ) Imrisieiasu 27 Im .h.I. Thank you ,Eve

also MARY LONDIS COCKBURN's birth was in1884 and mother on that cert was MARY ANN

Found this by Googling (not sure if it's what's on your certificate though):-

HVR - Haveri (India)

Haveri is a town in Karnataka, India.

I think this is quite likely though as HVR is NOT on this list of Military Acronyms and Abbreviations :-

Looking at the image for the marriage (on FindMyPast) I'm pretty sure that the intials are M.V.R. and not H.V.R.

I've enlarged part of the image and it's on this link:

Compare that first letter with the "H" in Hardy on the record below and then look at the other words beginning with "M" - it looks much more like those
