I don't think he was much different to most WW1 soldiers!

I think that Janette has lots of info but just can't decipher the writing on the WW1 service record

Can you have a look Jude, at this

Confined in barrack room, 'obtaining(?) recruits for money'

I don't think the word is 'obtaining' ?

I read that entry on the service record as

Irregular conduct in Barrack room ............. ordering (??) recruits for money.

for which he got 7 days confined to Barracks.

If anyone has FMP ............... I wonder if there military records are any easier to read???

Janette ...............

he was no worse than the majority of recruits called up for WW1 .........

......... my grandfather was in his 30s when he was mobilised, married with 3 children, and he got fined for overstaying his leave, etc.

I think it says Irregular conduct in barrack room - asking recruits for money :-)

Why I asked if there was any more info, is because I have an Albert Hartley in my family. But I can see from the records it is not the same one

I think you might be right about 'Irregular conduct in Barrack room ............. ordering recruits for money'

I think Albert had the right idea, while he committed small misdemeanors, he was being confined to barracks.......and NOT on the front line

Smart man

I read it as 'obasing' recruits for money but on reflection, I think 'abasing' makes more sense ?

To abase someone is to humiliate them, bring down their self-esteem.

The sort of thing which was, and still is, done to recruits in the army - perhaps he was paid by his colleagues so they could have the fun of watching it happen, or perhaps it was done as part of a bet amongst the ranks ? - NOT nice !!

For what it's worth, I read it as "asking recruits for money".

He certainly wasn't avoiding the front line - the offence happened at Bordon (the camp in Hants). He'd already been "blightied" in Feb 1918 and was pending his discharge on medical grounds having been gassed in December 1917, poor chap wasn't fit to serve. Source is medical discharge papers on FindMyPast.
