Thank you all very much for your guidance. It's such a sad little story and it needs the proper respect to 'put it to bed'.
Always grateful thanks for the help received here.

I would also suggest contacting the local library or Local Studies Archives of the town where the inquest occurred .......... or the person's home town if that was different.

I would ask them to look at papers from 1 or 2 days before the death occurred to 2 weeks after the inquest date, just to cover all bases.

I think you will find that there is a long time closure on the more "recent" records! at least 75yrs? That is if it has actually survived?
I am not allowed to view the inquest records regarding my sister whos death occurred in 1988,her inquest was held 2 months later in 1989.

Not only that my understanding is that a Coroner has the legal right to dispose of his / her own records after just 15 years.
Some of particular interest do get passed on to the relevant Archives but many are just destroyed!

As Kathleen has said your best bet is to try & find a newspaper report in the local paper of where the deceased lived/died,the old newspapers are held at the relevant main library, if you cannot do a search yourself the staff are "usually" helpful with doing the search for you, but they are likely to make a charge for doing so.

edit to add.........the inquest for my sisters death actully took place on the day of her funeral which meant we could not attend, hence my dissappointment at not being allowed to see the actual records!
In our case it was reported in the local paper, which gave us something! however the report was I'm sure somewhat diluted!!

I believe that you can obtain the official documents from the inquest in the UK. If you Google" Inquest report UK" or something along those lines it will tell you where to look for it.

Your best bet if you have the death certificate is to contact the nearest library to where the death took place and ask them if they hold back copies of local newspapers from 1988 and ask if they will search for you. It shouldn't take them long as the report of the inquest is likely to have been reported either on the day of the inquest or the next day (that is if it was reported at all - depends on the circumstances of the death).

Thank you.
I know from the Death Certificate that the inquest was held on 9th March 1988. Does this help?

It may have been reported in a local paper where the person lived or the event took place,,,,,,,no newspapers of that time are online.

an inquest full report can take place long after the event, depending what the circumstances were. but a short inquest can be held and closed within a short time so a family can hold a funeral .....,,,,,,,,, also depends when coroners do their full report,

Can anyone help me with the delicate matter of finding the newspaper reporting of an inquest held in 1988, please?
For obvious reasons, I won't post the name here.
Thank you in advance.
