Hi Jennifer - as the 1900s covers 100 years could you narrow it down a bit? :-)

When was Mark born?

not sure about that marriage nearly 9 years before first child born 1884

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 21 Aug 2015 12:32

We can definitely eliminate the 1875 marriage as that John Kane married Amelia Lamb:

First name(s) JOHN
Last name KANE
Marriage year 1875
Marriage day 16
Marriage month May
Place SOUTH SHIELDS
Groom's first name(s) John
Groom's last name Kane
Groom's parish -
Bride's first name(s) Amelia
Bride's last name Lamb
Bride's parish -
Description South Shields, St. Hilda
County Durham
Country England
Record set Northumberland and Durham Marriages

Unfortunately I can't find the c.1884 marriage in the Northumberland and Durham marriages.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 21 Aug 2015 13:00

This seems to be the family in 1891 under a variant spelling:

Name: Mark Cain
Age: 7
Estimated birth year: abt 1884
Relation: Son
Father's name: John Cain
Mother's name: Susan Cain
Gender: Male
Where born: Jarrow, Durham, England
Civil Parish: Hedworth Monkton and Jarrow
Ecclesiastical parish: Jarrow Grange
Town: Jarrow
County/Island: Durham
Country: England

Household Members:

John Cain 38 c1853 Ireland labourer in ship yard
Susan Cain 37 c1854 Ireland
Mark Cain 7 c1884 Jarrow, Durham, England
Ann Cain 3/12 c1891 Jarrow, Durham, England

Looks like Mark was born pretty close to the wedding if the promising marriage of John to Susannah Graham is correct.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 21 Aug 2015 13:05

1911 census gives birthplaces for John and Susan:

1911 England, Wales & Scotland Census

John Kane Head Married Male Blastfurnce Labourer 55 1856 Londonderry Resident
Susannah Kane Wife Married Female - 56 1855 Tyrone Resident

William Kane Son Single Male Apprentice Rivetter 16 1895 Durham Jarrow
Joseph Kane Son - Male No Occupation Yet 14 1897 Durham Jarrow

8 children born to the marriage, 6 living and 2 deceased at time of census 1911.

They also state they have been married for 22 years?

Changed his name to Graham ?

Maybe he was Graham to begin with ... it was his mother's maiden name so maybe he was illegitimate

Thank you so much. I know about William but not the other siblings and their families.want to try and find out why Mark changed his name maybe his mother was married before or not as he was registered as kane. Strange ?

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 22 Aug 2015 11:46

Did his parents split up perhaps and he decided to take her maiden name?

I am sure that baptism is correct so it ties down exactly when he was born. There is only one birth for Mark Graham that fits in Berwick - not quite the correct area though. And anyway he surely must have been registered as Kane

Kucinta...Unfortunately I can't find the c.1884 marriage in the Northumberland and Durham marriages.....if that baptism is correct perhaps it was a Catholic marriage?

Jennifer has the marriage in her tree as 22 January 1884 at St Bede's (same place as the baptism) but as you say, they declare 22 years in 1911 which places it as 1889! They obviously couldn't count very well because it was definitely Q1 1884!!
