12 December 1858 - The Era - London, London, England

SINGULAR CHARGE OF AFFILIATION AGAINST A MARRIED MAN
At the Ilford Session on Saturday last, before a full bench. Martha Spackman summoned a farmer, named Webb, as to why he should not contribute to the support of her illegitimate child of which she alleged defendant to be the father. February 1857 they became acquainted, 5th December child was born.
Webb was sworn, and denied most empathically that he ever took the slightest liberty with Complainant. The Magistrate pointed out that the law required that Complainant's evidence should be confirmed, as it was not, the summons was dismissed.

Does that mean you're not looking for more information about the family, Lynda?

Your opening post gave the impression that you were, and we're happy to help if you wish.

Lynda Report 19 Aug 2015 18:41

I am looking into the family of the above, both born roughly 1812 living in West Ham. James was sent to Tasmania in 1848 and as far as I can tell Martha then worked as a needlewoman in order to keep the children of which there was about 5, but I have found a death in 1855 of a Martha Spackman in West Ham and was wondering if this was the same person and if so what happened to the children, most would have been in their teens and if anybody knows anything about this family I would be very grateful.
