Jeanette .

to find if any member of GR has a connection to your grandfather, you have to search the trees.

A very small minority of GR members read the Boards, and many of them could not reply on here anyway (ie, free members).

Got to Search at the top of your screen

Click on Search All Trees

Enter your grandfather's name

You may then send pms (private messages) to any member who is shown to have him in their tree

Good luck

thankyou to everyone for their replies, I had some information on him, but it was the time he was in service, I have been trying to find, I heard he was taken prisoner by the germans, and suffered from the gas, but I have only been able to get his medal roll, I do not know if he fought at the somme or elsewhere in france, ancestry cannot help, or forces war records, I just wondered if anyone out there is related to his family. :-)

If you do not have it, you should buy his marriage certificate ........... from GRO (General Register Office) for £9.25. Do not order from anywhere else!!

This will tell you his occupation and where he was living ................ iie was he already in the East Surrey Regiment or in the Horse Guards, or maybe even out of the service

There are 2 Public Family trees on ancestry for your grandfather, which seem to be well researched ................ one has22 attached records and 22 sources, which indicates documentation of what is on the tree. This tree also has a photo of him in what looks like Horse Guards uniform

He's on a tree on Ancestry that has a photo of him in quite a fancy uniform with breastplate, long white kid gloves and wearing a sword. He's holding a helmet with a big plume on top. There's also another photo of him in later years.

Jeanette ......

less than 30% of the records for WW1 survive, and even those are usually badly damaged and incomplete. This is due to damage to them during WW2.

You are extremely lucky if you do find anything at all.

You might try Googling the East Surrey Regiment and the Horse Guards to see if they have any records on line, or if there is any possibility that you could email them to see if they have their own records / war diaries, etc.
