Londonbelle, Everything you have found is absolutely correct. I can tell you everything in that family, which included my greatgrandfather William Trotman b.1838 age 3 is a mess, but I was able to sort it out. My father came from a family of twelve plus his parents, so my grandfather was born in 1872. After the death of Martha in 1825 Henry her husband when to live with his granddaughter Mary Lewis Trotman age in fact 24 and as you say Mary Knight is the older Mary in that census age 45.

Londonbelle,
I have just been reading all the comments made by you and the other very helpful people and I now can see the person, I am not so much looking for her, but I am sure it's the person in your entry 15th Aug at 19.37 pm. I forget once the marriage has taken place she would be called Lewis, now I have confirmed to you that this is definitely the right Martha, how can I now find her mother without going to Gloucestershire to the records office? I think I have probably had my time with this relation please tell me if I am asking to many questions. Regards Keith

Yes Martha and Henry did marry in 1822, but had all their children before that date consequently they retained their mothers maiden name and did not change it to Lewis after they married. I check their marriage record but as both her parents if they are Nicholas and Elizabeth were dead in 1822 there in nothing on the record to give me a clue. You will note that Henry's son William b.1792-1831 was sentenced to death for robbery, but was reprieved at the last minute to be transported but died in one of the hulks moored off the Essex coast. Thank you again. Keith

This looks to be Henry Lewis' Burial which fits in with the Bap

ame: Henry Lewis
Birth Year: abt 1761
Death Year: abt 1844
Death Age: 83
Burial Date: 21 Sep 1844
Parish: Berkeley, Gloucestershire, England
Parish as it Appears: Woodford, Berkeley
Register Type: Parish Registers

LondonBelle Report 16 Aug 2015 12:41

If, as the 1841 census states, Henry Lewis was born in the County this could be his Baptism

Name: Henry Lewis
Event Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 15 Sep 1762
Parish: Berkeley, Gloucestershire, England
Parish as it Appears: Berkeley
Father: Jno. Lewis of Heathfield (possibly Hewelsfield, Glos.)
Register Type: Bishop's Transcripts

Name: Henry Lewis
Event Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 15 Sep 1761
Parish: Berkeley, Gloucestershire, England
Father: Jno Lewis of Heathfield
Register Type: Parish Registers

Both of the above have images of original documents. You will note that the day and month is the same on both but the Year is different. I would be inclined to go with the second document 15 Sep 1761 as that is the Parish Register.

Interestingly, I have found this 1841 census entry

Name: Henry Lewis
Age: 80
Estimated birth year: abt 1761
Gender: Male
Where born: Gloucestershire, England
Civil Parish: Berkeley
Hundred: Berkeley (Upper Division)
County/Island: Gloucestershire
Country: England
Street address:

Occupation:

View image
Registration district: Thornbury
Sub-registration district: Berkeley
Neighbors: View others on page
Piece: 347
Book: 4
Folio: 28
Page Number: 9
Household Members:
Name Age
Henry Lewis 80
Mary Trotman 45
Mary Trotman 20
William Trotman 20
Ann Trotman 10
Absalom Trotman 9
George Trotman 6
William Trotman 3

As you know the information on the 1841 census is a bit basic and doesn't give relationships but I'm wondering whether this is the Mary Knight that married William Trotman. Ages on the 1841 census tend to be rounded up so again this could fit in with a birth of 1792. Also, Mary's husband died in 1831 which again would account for why there is no sign of a husband.

One other thing that it states is that they were all born in the County including Henry Lewis.

Good morning Malyon & Londonbelle, sorry had to go to bed last night, have looked at your last notes, the first one Martha Pearce is a possible the marriage date is five years before the marriage of Martha and Henry Lewis, so Simon Trotman could have left her or died in that time so I need to look into that. Secondly Londonbelle I know Henry Lewis came from Devon or Cornwall. With the documents I have on Martha & Henry I am happy, but I do not know who her parents were I am told they are Nicholas Trotman b.1734 & Elizabeth Allen, who had two Martha's were, and even though I have a baptism record for a Martha b.1764 and her parents shown as Nicholas b.1734 & Elizabeth b.1747 I cannot prove that this the Martha that married Henry Lewis. I am going to Berkeley records office next week on a busman's holiday to see if I can solve this problem.
A thousand thanks to all of you good people who have shown an interest in my family. Regards Keith

So presumably you are looking at ancestors for Henry Lewis and his children?
If this is the case, can you give the names, places and years of their births? This will help us to build a picture of the family in question and perhaps help us to move backwards.
Thanks

Beverley yes you are correct, but she did marry in 1922 and died three years later, this part of my tree is so complicated I have enough records to paper my lounge so to speak but I still cannot get to the bottom of it, so many thanks.

Malyon, I do believe you are getting warm, I will now go with my usual thoughts on your finding and say 'how many Martha's were married in 1822 around this area'

The 1790 birth is ok if I give it a +- of two years so I will start to research Robert and Sarah and see what I come up with. Thank you again I feel we have together made some progress tonight. Many thanks Keith

If it's correct that Elizabeth Trotman née Allen died in 1808, she wouldn't be witnessing a marriage in 1816.
Also, she would sign as Trotman, not Allen.

Anyway I very much doubt that someone born in 1764 would be marrying for the first time in 1822!
Perhaps there is a missing generation somewhere down the line.

I have read the letter I was telling you about some while ago, and I read that the Martha you mentioned who was born in 1764 and died 1776 was an error in the entry and should have been a Mary Trotman, how that happened I have no idea, however the Martha you have come up with is the one I have in my tree and have all the records to go with what you have found, but I do think you have mentioned something that I had not thought of, for a start her birth of 1762 I know that might be +- but next you say that she may have been married before and nobody in my circles has thought of that. I can tell you my family has been a nightmare trying to sort them but this is the last link that I must find. Many thanks for your assistance. Keith

that must be martha's parents that are witness to her marriage 1816

It looks like you are looking at this lady

Name: Martha Lewis
Birth Year: abt 1762
Death Year: abt 1825
Death Age: 63
Burial Date: 19 Nov 1825
Parish: Berkeley, Gloucestershire, England
Parish as it Appears: Berkeley
Register Type: Parish Registers

Of course Martha could have been married before to a Mr Trotman so her maiden name would be different from Trotman. If she married Henry Lewis in 1822 it does seem a bit old for a first marriage.

Many thanks for you interest, I got all this info from a lady who used to work at Gloster records Office and for some years never gave it much thought until I noticed that the first Martha born to Nicholas and Elizabeth died when she was 12. so I have to try and find another Martha from the Berkeley area or near bye. Someone has just sent me a letter I will see what it says and get back to you if I find it useful. Thankyou for your help.

How did you get to the Marriage of your Martha Trotman to Henry Lewis in 1822?
