Great minds and all that - I too sent pm regarding returning to thread.

I had a reply and Ann Elizabeth has computer problems. I asked if she knew how to get back to thread, but as yet Ann Elizabeth has not come back. It may be she will in time.

For Ordnance read repair and looking after ammunition and mending broken equipment also think bomb disposal and how dangerous it could be. Could tie up with wounds i.e. working at bench or floor level.

Or query unrest in India at the time although it was mostly against each other due to religion prior to independence.

Have PM'd Amy Elizabeth to come back to thread and see new info.

I do hope that Amy returns to her thread. Unfortunately she had marked it as answered before this new info had been found proving that he did indeed die in 1946.

16 August 1946 - Sevenoaks Chronicle and Kentish Advertiser - Sevenoaks

KILLED IN INDIA. WESTERHAM GIRL BEREAVED.
Mrs. M. Whalley, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Bond, of Vicarage Hill, Westerham, received official notification at the weekend, that her husband Sergeant William Whalley, R.A.O.C., died in India, on the previous Wednesday, August 7th, from abdominal wounds. Sergt. Whalley, who was a native of Blackburn, was 22 years of age, he had been serving in India for the last ten months, and was looking forward to returning to this Country in October, and to being demobilised by the end of the year.
No details have so far been received as to the manner in which he received his wounds. In addition to his wife, he leaves two young children.

There was another William Whalley who died in 1945 but not in India , maybe the person on ancestry picked up the wrong death

A tree on Ancestry says he died 1945, Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. It has the same parents as on the CWGC site but no wife's name.
