Hi

I have 2 deaths in my tree both give 4 Hamilton Place as the address
1st Esther Gordon married to George Finlay died 1847
4 Hamilton Place East Lothian

2nd Alexander Richardson who was married to Isabel Finlay he died 1847 also
4 Hamilton Place Bridgestock

Not knowing if these two places are the same and given I've not been able to find Alexander & Isabel in the 1841 census Alexander was a coachman
is their anyway of finding out who lived at this address in 1841,
if the names are the right ones then i can get the census from scotlandspeople

Thank you

For 1841 Ancestry is only bringing up the street address - no numbers, and has Hamilton Place in Midlothian (Edinburgh);

Where did you find the info that Alexander Richardson died at 14 Hamilton Place, Bridgestock - wherever that is?

The only 1847 death for an Alexander Richardson in Scotland showing on SP is for one who was drowned at sea (therefore there's no address !). Burial in parish of Dunbar, East Lothian.

A Google search doesn't show any place called Bridgestock.

There's a Hamilton Place in Stockbridge in Edinburgh. (which is the one previous posters have found).

Hamilton Place addresses are flats, so more than one family could have the same number, but be in different flats.

Thank you for your help

I got the death of Alexander from scotlandspeople it had address as 4 Hamilton Place and he was a coachman , yes I have the 1851 census where his wife was living , so I put 2+2 together I've a feeling they were living separate but Isabel his wife had a daughter Georgina in 1838 not found a birth for her though on her death it has her father as Alexander

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 15 Aug 2015 20:36

Oh, yes, here's Alexander's death - SP doesn't recognise Alexr as a variant of Alexander!

10/07/1847 RICHARDSON ALEXR ----- M ST CUTHBERT'S EDINBURGH CITY CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/02 0510 0313

http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

FreeCEN is good for the early Scottish censuses - 1841 has 29 complete and 3 partial counties (of 33); 1851 has 19 complete and 7 partial; 1861 has 11 complete and 2 partial; nothing is done for BEW and only CAI has anything after 1871. MLN is done for 1841-1851.
FreeCEN transcriptions are generally quite a bit more accurate than Ancestry, and marginally more accurate than SP/FMP.
They have a nice display, and buttons that let you go thru adjacent h/h's (adjacent on the census pages, that is).
