Kate, if your Mum was born in Scotland, her birth certificate will give the date and place of her parents' marriage. You can then buy some credits for Scotlandspeople and look at their marriage certificate to confirm their parents' names including mother's maiden surnames. That way you will be sure you are researching the correct families.

Credits for Scotlandspeople only cost £7.00 for 30. 1 credit allows you to view search results and 5 credits to view / download a certificate. Scottish death certificates name spouses and parents including the mother's maiden surname if the informant knows the details.

Could the 1881 census have a bad transcriptiion of Marion??

Looks to be the same family in 1871, although the ages have shifted by a couple of years except Christina,

It would also appear that Marion has died between 1871-1881 census and John has remarried
EDIT - see 1891 census below ? a bad transcription of Marion on the 1881??

no i don't have any certificate's....
i do believe archie's parents were john mc lean & marion gillis

yes that's his ship... i do have a newspaper clip that my mother kept all those years but its very hard to make out what it says....

His marriage certificate will give his father's name and occupation also his mother's name, including her maiden surname if he married in Scotland. Do you have his marriage certificate please?

Maybe? (Remember though that there will be many McLean / MacLeans on Barra)

Hi all,

My mothers father was Archiebald mclean from Glen isle of barra his wife was Annie Mclean from Borve isle of barra any info on their siblings would be great.... they had 5 kids Neil, Kate, Mary, John, Marion (my mother some folk called her Morag )

my g/father's was a Sub-lieutenant on HMS redbreast this ship was lost at sea in 1917...
