To round this thread off, here's what I received from the library (just in case anyone but me is interested)!

NEWPORT WOMAN KILLED

Large Crowd Watch Fatal Accident

Hundreds of visitors leaving Barry Island late on Saturday evening were the witnesses of a tragedy, when a woman was knocked down by an omnibus on the road overlooking the Barry Athletic Ground.

The woman, Mary Ann Weaver, aged 50, of Fairfax-street (sic it's road) Newport was, it is believed, crossing the roadway from the left-hand side, when the vehicle struck her and threw her into the road.

Alarm of the accident was given, and Messrs. G Tanner and G Litchfield, members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, were immediately on the scene and she was taken to the ambulance hut, but, when Dr E.E. Owens M.C. arrived her pronounced life extinct.

At the time the accident happened, the traffic was particularly heavy and a thick mist was falling.

THE INQUEST

There's a lot...but the second paragraph reads...blah blah with Mrs Weaver on the night of the tragedy and they came out of the Ship Hotel at about 10pm. They had had two glasses of beer each in the hotel..............it appears she and a two friends crossed the road hand in hand and Aunt Molly got hit by the bus that none of them saw :-(

I am so glad I researched this...it's fascinating , if sad.

Claire...I had an unexpected response from the library today. Yes they can do the search for me and will mail me the results within the week! So don't make a special journey.

On the other matter, a work colleague is from Barry and she knew of the Amy Evans Hospital and googled it...they were open in 1898 so it is a possibility :-)

AG, thanks for the links. No, the certificate only arrived this afternoon. I live in Newport, so Barry library is a bit of a trek for me. I might see if it's something they could look at for me

Thanks

Jude

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 8 Aug 2015 15:45

My grand aunt, Mary Ann Cording, married Joseph Weaver in 1902. They had, to my knowledge, thirteen children between 1903 and 1924. I have everything about the family. My late mother had always told me her Aunt Molly died in an accident in Barry Island.

The only death I could find that matched the age was in Q4 1932 gro Cardiff. So I sent for the certificate and it has hit the bullseye. It reads:

Mary Ann Weaver, aged 50 years, 09 July 1932 Barry. Informant David Rees Coroner East Glamorgan. Date of Inquest 12 July 1932

Cause of death Fracture of skull due to being knocked down by a motor bus. Accident, no PM

I would like to know if anyone who is better than me at searching papers can find any news report of the accident or inquest.

Many thanks in advance

Jude
