Would anyone have more than a standard subscription to Genes as I've found a military record for my ancestor but can't access it.
His name is Thomas Roberts, service no. 21866, Imperial Yeomanry.

Thanks.

Thanks greyghost. I was hoping it would say whether he actually went abroad or not. I googled the 32nd company/2nd battalion and apparently not all of them went abroad. I guess my next step will be to apply for his military record.

Thanks.

It does say that he went abroad in that he was awarded The Queen's South Africa Medal with clasps for the particular engagements he was involved in i.e. Cape Colony, Transvaal etc. You can google each of those to see what they were about.

Have never seen more info on a Boer War record on line, there may be more actually via the National Archives which may be down loadable - check the site, or else someone else on here will maybe know.

Thanks. I guess I read that as the company going abroad rather than him.

I'll check again on-line.

Yvonne, where and when was Thomas Roberts born? It may help locate actual service records (if any do exist). It's always possible that if he'd changed regiments then he could have a different service number previously.

He was born in St. Helens, Lancs. in 1880 and I have a copy of his attestation which was dated 29 Jan 1901.

I looked on-line to see if I could send for his military record but apparently not - both world wars yes, but not the boer war.

Did you know that he was medically discharged on 4th July 1902 from Bloemfonteine, his Station?

He suffered from a severe case of enteric fever induced by infection. He was admitted to hospital on 29 June 1902 and was transferred back to base on the 8th July. He was judged to be 'unfit for service for some time.'

He spent 10 days in hospital in Blomfonteine then from 29 July to 19 Aug he travelled home on the Hospital ship SS Simla. He improved on the journey home and was transferred to Brockhurst, Shorncliffe.

His discharge was from the army was confirmed on 19 Sept 1902.

Quite comprehensive records on FindMyPast (presumably on this site too). The service number wasn't transcribed on FMP - birthplace and year of birth brought it up straight away.

I hadn't found any of this ... looks like his service didn't last very long. Thank you so much. You never cease to amaze me.

I've just tried to bring the record up on findmypast but can't find it. The only thing I find is his Attestation, which I have. How did you get to the records you mention ... I've tried birth, name, service no.

Thanks.

Yvonne, are you just searching Boer War Records? He is the first one to come up if you search under "Military, Armed Forces and Conflicts"

Thanks, I've now got it ... quite a bit of info and the fact it gives his home address confirms it's definitely him.
